Back in 2007, the first year that I learned that a fig tree COULD be grown in a container, and overwintered in a cold, garden shed...I learned this from a Belleclare Nursery guide.... I also started a "fig journal"...a notebook, in which I recorded the the original dimensions of my trees; varietal names; number of figs p/year; weather for the season; etc. I have been making brief entries for each season, and I find it interesting to note the progress of some of my trees.
That's it. No big deal...I'm sure others have done something similar.
First varieties that I started growing were: "ATREANO GOLD"- Belleclare...purchased from Zaino's Garden Center ...$49.00 / 6 ft. tree....and three, rooted twigs, of an unidentified variety that I call just "RED ITALIAN" figs. Each one of those original twigs grew into 6 ft. single-stem trees. Both varieties are still alive, and produce plenty of sweet figs each season...in spite of my slow learning curve in the beginning years of my fig-growing endeavors. That "RED ITALIAN" may very well be "Hardy Chicago" or, a variety that is similar.
