Fig letters

So, over the past 5 months, I've been keeping track of everywhere I spot a fig tree around town.  A few weeks ago, I sent 6 letters asking if they would share details about their trees.  I got 2 responses, and both are in the process of moving and leaving their trees behind.

One in particular is a neighbor of a very good friend (though they don't know each other).  He has a big Peter's Honey (15 ft tall 12 ft wide), a couple of Brown Turkeys (one pretty big one smaller) and a couple "LSU ??" (I suspect LSU Gold). All are in ground.

He said his favorite of the bunch is the Peter's Honey that he bought from TyTy several years back.  So I gave him one of my Peter's Honey to take with him.  He said that before he moves we can take plenty of cuttings.

Since it will probably be about a month before he sells this house, I told him about the possibility of doing air layers on it.   He agreed, so I did 5 air layers on it last Monday, and two more today.  I even spray painted the foil covering to make it look nicer during house showings.  Hopefully the air layers will be ready in time.  If not, we're going to have a ton of cuttings soon.. lol

One of the figs on the Peter's Honey was ripe today and he told me I could pick it.  It was really good. Probably about 2 inches in diameter.  I shared it with my favorite daughter.   I really hope these air layers work out.  I used rooting hormone on 4 of them, but left the other 3 without.

I'll try to remember to take some pictures of it tomorrow.

That's a great idea!  I hadnt really thought of a way to approach strangers about their fig trees.   I'm timid but I could do this.   Good luck!

I only have one child ;)

Very good, thanks for sharing.

Best,

What a great idea to spray paint the foil coverings on the air layers.  I too have scoped around the neighborhood looking for fig trees.  Here in the pacific northwest there isn't deep fig history like there is on the east coast so it's unlikely I would find anything other than the basic figs, but it's still fun looking and finding people who have to many ripe figs or just don't want them.  Fig jam!  I did find a white fig that is growing well here in the ground and the owner is quite nice in letting me take a few cuttings. I'd like to find out what it is some day.
Thanks for sharing!

Can you share the wording of your anon. letter to your neighbors. The only thing I can think of is....

Hi,
