Hi everyone, im new here and have a question.

Its just entering winter here and I was sorting out some chilli plant that I had growing in pots.
In the one pot with my Aji Lemon, A small fig tree had started growing. I have no idea how it could have got there.
I have planted it in its own new pot. I know it would probably be impossible to ID now but was wondering if you thought it was an edible fig that would one day produce figs, or am i wasting my time.
Also maybe how it got there, A bird maybe

Where are you located? Do you have fig wasp in your area that could pollinate figs to have a viable seed that could grow a fig tree? Welcome to the forum!

Hi, Im in South Africa. There are fig wasps here for other species of figs. No idea for Ficus Carica though.

It looks like it has hardened brown wood, stem seems thick for a seedling, unless it's been growing for a long time.

My seedlings all have thin green stems and numerous suckers at the base.

Do you use any mulch? I have had many cuttings and seeds sprout up in free greenwaste mulch before.

I would say keep it !!! :-) for most of us that dont have the fig wasp it would be really fun to grow a new variety. Small chance

The stem is actually very thin. About pencil thick. Not very green but hasn,t hardened. quite tapered. No mulch. Was growing in my own mix of coco pith, coco husks, perlite and some compost which i dont think would have had figs in but i suppose you never know. Its a bit strange but will have to just see what grows.

Thanks, that's interesting then, I have heard of a few good seedlings figs that came from wild found trees. Grow it up and see what it turns into.

there is no bad fig   except   McNasty   my impossible to kill  disgusting watery no flavor fig.

There's a 25% chance of it being an common fig but since it appears you have the wasp your smyrnas are edible so you have about a 50% chance of having an edible fig. 

Keep it and you might be pleasantly surprised. :)
