Fig Name Confusion

Kind of drives me nuts when there are so many names for one fig.  I was hoping to find a National Fig Registry like the National Grape Registry.  The grape registry helped me out immensely finding heat, wind loving grapes.  My grapes thrive in my hot climate because of the Grape Registry.  UC Davis puts it out, but seems they only care about Grapes.

I think there are more vineyards than Fig orchards, so probably that is the reason...

But UC Davis does have a page for figs.  It will blow your mind!  175 main varieties with dozens of names for the same fig.  It does give some good information.  This is not the page where you order figs!  This is the informative stuff!

Enjoy!

I believe Jon was talking about this page when he said he could follow the synonym trail and prove a green fig was the same as a dark fig.

Of all the fruiting trees, I think that clear identification of fig varieties is likely the most problematic.   It can be frustrating at times.   I wrote up a few comments about the situation a while back.  Click here.    As Jon frequently states - that is part of the "fun."   I do think that over the years of input from dedicated fig folks, some of this will continue to be sorted out.

Bananas are a mess, as well.

If you got to Figs 4 Fun, click on the variety pages, and then click "More Info" you will get a page of additional information. If it is a USDA accession, there will be a link "USDA / UC Davis Accession Data" which will give you a PDF of the Accession Record. Example

" I think there are more vineyards than Fig orchards, so probably that is the reason..."

Yeah it's nowhere near close.....

If figs made good wine, which make good money, there would be a better registry.  Follow the money
