FIG NEWBIE

Hey Everyone -

Just purchased 2 cuttings on ebay and placed them in a plastic container covered in sphagum peat moss - any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Plenty of info in the search function.  For now, just make sure your moss isn't too wet.  Damp moss will suffice, but soaked moss will rot them.  If you can squeeze water out of it, its probably too wet.  Other than that, welcome to the forum.

Good to know! Thank you so much for responding.  Looking forward to the next step :-)

BTW - I'm in Zone 4

Good advice by Brettim!

Also here is a great link on some methods and how to get started on rooting cuttings;

Zone 4?  That = cold.  I hope the cuttings you got are cold hardy.  What variety did you get?  Congrats on your purchase and I wish you well!

These are Italian Rare Alice Fig Tree not sure what that means?  if someone can explain I would truly appreciate :-)

I do know that these are grown in the New York New England colder areas. But obviously originated in ITALY

I have 2 cuttings lying in Spagnum Moss and they appear to be doing well..How long does it take for the roots to grow?

Hi Kathy, welcome to the forum. A quickly look at your profile says your in Queens, N.Y. I think that puts you some ware in zone 6.Not sunny California, but much better better for growing figs.

Welcome!  We have several members in your area.  Hopefully some of them will chime in.  There are also 2 fig get togethers not all that far from you.

sorry to jump in , what fig get togethers are there locally?  im not to far from queens would love to hang out with some of the people on here.

I found that 50% perlite and 50% coca coir in low light works for me, especially indoors works good.

I think there is a member of the forum that does a Staten Island Fig Fest every year. Towards the end of summer...

thanks ill keep my eyes out

Kathy,

I am also a newer fig grower and just east of Queens and have good luck with celeste and brown turkey varieties grown in pots which need to go in garage in winter. I have ok luck growing chicago hardy in the ground but last winter it died back to ground and now starting to put on new shoots. Your method of slightly damp spagham moss works really great and once roots show I place in clear cups with a very light potting mix like pro mix bx. Good luck and so much great info on this forum.

Barry
