Fig of Greatneck

Off of Greatneck Road in Virginia Beach.

Very few of the limbs contained any three lobe leafs most are like the one in the picture. Fig has the flavor of a sweet peach.

Great looking fig Chris ! It's all about the taste and sweet peach sounds like a winner !! Are you growing this one ?

Not growing this one yet......

Plan on either getting some cuttings or doing an air layer.

Can't quite tell from the pics, does it have a lot of seeds - was it crunchy? Was it in someones yard and maybe there's a story attached ?

The red portion was full of soft seeds, no crunch factor.

Someones back yard hanging over a 8' privacy fence. Down the street appears to be four different fig trees. Going to go ring door bells here soon.

Wow that's great - good luck fig hunting . Look forward to hearing more about this one and the others when you get them .

Now, I wish I lived closer to your area. Great fig.

That sounds like a winner.  Good luck!

Chris,
That looks a lot like Celeste.
Does it have a closed eye? and How large is the fig?
Thanks.

Pete,

Closed yes and about an inch to an inch in a half.

There was no smell at the site or on the leafs pulled for the photo.

Celeste was my first thought when seeing the tree, but they tend to smell around here like cat pee.

***edit for spelling correction

Maybe it's just the fence blocking the smell.

goss

Never heard of a peach tasting fig. I would love to taste one.

Goss,

The leaves had no smell like the regular celest do around here.

Going to try going by the house over the next few days to see what I can find out.

Very nice.  look forward to the updates

Hi Chris,  Virginia seems to have it's share of "unknown" and found figs. I bet with the mild weather in Virginia Beach, there should be plenty of fig plants. I'm suprised and delighted that Richmond has quite a lot also.

I have gotten in touch with the home owner. Will be visiting the owner in a few days for measurements, cuttings, air layers and photos.

Will have the history and more coming soon!

Glad to hear it Chris . Please post your findings.
