Fig of the Day - Alma 08-28-2013

San Diego, CA

This is a honey type fig, in my opinion. Very sweet, but in my experience needs a lot of heat to really ripen correctly. Similar in size to Celeste.

In the papers LSU wrote when they released their variants, they compared Alma to their own releases, and Alma is recorded as having an average size of 35g, which is bigger than most Celeste type fruits.

Thanks for sharing another one I am waiting on.

Mine have been super slow growing. First year, sad little twigs. They are finally starting to like fig trees this year, though zero figs. I've heard good things about this one, but patience is required.

Thank you for posting Alma's photos. The following Alma's photos were taken this afternoon. The tree is in Bethesday, Maryland. There are many figs on this tree. These Alma's figs are big, they are the size of a regular Brown Turkey at the time I took the photographs, but they still not ripe let. I think they need at least one more week before they are fully ripe.

Best,
Tam

Thanks for sharing this one.  Mine is a very small plant so I will have to be patient.  =)

Tam, it looks like that Alma was planted in the space between the curb and sidewalk.  In Rockville, I asked the city about planting there and unfortunately they only will only allow a few varieties of tree to be planted there.  All are non-edible shade type of trees. Maybe Bethesda's rules are different?  Anyway, that looks like a really productive variety - thanks for sharing.
