Fig of the Day - Col de Dame 08-23-2013

San Diego, CA

The fig can have the darkest red color of any fig that I have seen, much darker than the one pictured.. It needs to be very ripe before the texture and sweetness are correct - testing your patience. Hard to describe, but this is a fig that is in its own flavor category, unlike any other that I know of.

That is a good lookin' fig.  =)  Thanks for sharing.

have handful figs on my CdDB USDA/UCD.. haven't started swelling yet. definitely looking forward to them.

i think there is a big diffrence in some of the figs between almost ripe compared to fully ripe.
somehow the chemical /enzymatic changes in the last few days makes the difference..
Its a test of patience

Yes Col De Dame,it's in a higher class  by itself be it white, black or grise.
Difficult to make it produce ripe fruits in less ideal climates,(needs long Summer) but ,when succesfull,it is a piece of Haven on your table.
I do not recommend it as a basic only one fig,in your Garden, but as an extra to Malta Black,Dalmatie,Marseilles black vs,Adriatic JH,Gino's,Violette de Bordeaux,Ronde de Bordeaux,Atreano and other super productive, decent ,tasting figs,is very advisable.

It's definitely on the running wishlist. I like the look of it. It's one of those figs that you see and say in your head, "Yes, I must have this." It really matters not why.

I've got some on my tree, one is beginning to swell, can't wait!

That was one very delicious fig! Picture makes ones mouth water.

C'mon Jon quit holding back where is the dark one ?

Last Wednesday.

Jon um no no CddN least not "fig of the day" posted last 2 Wednesday.
and
the one above looks like a paleface.  ; )

I enjoy a good joke though.

How does this fig differ from Strawberry Verte? They look similar. Do they taste a lot different?

Very different. Col de Dame is very unique in flavor.

Is there any relationship between the Col De Dames? White, black and Gris besides being figs. Anyone know the history on the naming of these?

USDA/UCD CdDB is rather rain tolerant. with never ending rain last yr, provided one of the most amazing figs ever.

Figfinatic,
Galgoni says the long slender neck on the fruit provided the name transl. "Lady's Neck"

CdDB, CdDN, and CdDG are three most common CdD in CONUS. there are about 5 more out there in europe. the first three have same taste profile, however some say CdDG tastes the best. i'm sure there are others who would say CdDN is the best.

I like the pyriform and purple / black, which is my best-loved fig. definitely looking forward to them.

Pete, any idea if UCD is the original source for CdD B in the US. I'm hoping that mine is after reading your comment about its rain tolerance. Did you find its skin thick at all?
