Fig of the Day - Marseilles VS 08-22-2013

San Diego, CA

This started as a mislabeled plant years ago, with Herman, and has proved to be a good tasting and versatile variety.

Also known as Marseilles Black VS.

This was one of the early uses of initials to distinguish the various examples of a particular variety in my collection.

Looks great.  my best grower so far.  Expect fully ripe figs in the next couple days.  cant wait

If it was mislabeled, what was the source of this fig? Just curious if other figs are like it and/or possibly the same fig by another name. Anything Herman or Jon or anyone else can tell us would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a few figs on my MBVS youngish tree . Hoping they will ripen this year.

Jon is that a breba example ?

Martin, what is a breba?

Another good looking fig and picture.  Thanks for sharing

Would it be worth it at all (or possible) to talk about growing zones for all these figs as part of the blurb? Those of us in borderline climates (5-7) and colder probably could use any insight into what varieties we could hope to have success with. Or is it generally possible to grow most varieties with adequate winterization?

Todd

I'm sure this ha been asked before but I'll ask again, what does the vs stand for?

Vasile...?
To me, VS means I need it!

I'm interested in hearing the story too.  I seem to remember hearing the
Marseilles Black tree was discovered in Columbia, MD.  Or am I getting it confused with another fig?

Martin, he truly is a riot! Totally nuts!

The story behind this fig is described in this the thread below, especially in post #7.

Perfect. Thanks, Rewton. That is great information and exactly what I wanted to know.

Ulster, New York, Zone 6.

Marseilles Black VS was acquired as a gift in late June 2013, It was acquired in New Jersey from VS in July 2012, and was in need of a little TLC after dormancy.
Pictured is my container grown Marseilles Black VS, It was bare rooted, root pruned and down potted (from a 5 gallon to 3 gallon nursery pot) in late June. Although this summer has been cool, overcast and rainy (night low temperatures have been in the 50's for the past 3 weeks),  This tree has put on almost 3 feet of linear growth and has 3 figs that are currently at the stagnant stage (they were produced within weeks of repotting) and is producing figlets at every leaf node, which will be pinched. This plant is approximately 1-1/2 years old, in a 3 gallon nursery pot, in a modified 5-1-1 potting mix. This tree is currently one of the fastest growing cultivar in my yard.
