Fig of the day - Sucrette 08-26-2013

San Diego, CA
This fig originated, for me, from USDA / UC Davis. Excellent sweetness and flavor. Color has varied from honey to strawberry. Has ripened mid-late season.

Thanks for these Fig Of The Day posts. Very interesting. Please keep them coming.

Looks like an interesting fig.  I would love to be able to sample all these different types of figs.  I guess I'll just have to rely on y'alls descriptions and opinions, which I love to read by the way.  =)

another fun post, jon. i hope you collect all of them in one spot and maybe pin to the top?

Bass has mentioned in the past that Sucrette UCD is not the same as Sucrette Baud.  Is there a consensus to this?  When I added this to my wish list oh so many years ago, it was because I saw Baud's pictures.  I now, however, am growing UCD's Sucrette.

Jon, how will we deal with FotD when the name represents more than one variety (e.g. Paradiso) or when more than one name represents one variety (e.g. Aldo/Palermo Red/etc.)?

Very nice pictures Jon

goss

James, Welcome to the "fun" that is figs.

Suzie, it was pinned from day one. ;-))

To all, the point of this is to figure out where these varieties are growing and how they are performing for different people in different places.

In my opininon, according to the pictures (I can be wrong, of course!), it is not the same as Baud's Sucrette.
Baud's Sucrette is, by far, the best green fig I have so far.

I have a Sucrette and in my zone (10b) it is an excellent performer: it ripens in very hot weather and it is not affected by the torrential rain we have been having this year (doesn't split or crack). It has a good fig flavor but the skin is tough. A closed eye prevents spoilage and bug entering. A very good fig for hot and humid climate!

that's actually a good thing your reported, Sal!  Darkman would be happy to know that!  How productive is it?

Mine is still young, about 3 yrs old.
Productivity will be determined in the next 2 or 3 years.

I have a young tree from FMD that I will plant out this year. I wonder if it is a UCD or Baud?
