Hello, I am new to growing figs in Michigan. Anyone have any suggestions. I bought a Chicago hardy from stark bros nusery and it didn't do so well. I'm hoping I can save it all the leaves wilted away. One can see if you look closely at the new leaf sprouting out the edges are black. It seemed to happen overnight. The tree was doing very well at first, but I'm not sure if I did something wrong. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like cold damage to me. I believe that it should recover. Keep it on a warm semi sunny location near a wall and as long as temp does not go below 40, try not to move it back and forth. Make sure that rabbits or mice cannot climb and get to it.

How many hours of sun should young trees from clippings receive per day?

I wouldn't worry about a few unhappy leaves.  I used to grow figs in containers further up north in a windy, exposed area.  The leaves often got damaged in spring, but the trees bounced back.

Not sure about Stark Bros, but a lot of the nurseries around here get their fruit trees from commercial farms that are a few growing zones warmer.  They truck them up all leafed out so they look attractive to consumers early in the season.  Problem is, that means they're used to warmer weather.  It can take them some time to harden off.  That might explain the leaf damage?

Anyway, I'd say leave the little guy in part shade for two weeks, until it's putting out new growth.  Then move it to full sun.  Ultimately, your fig plants will want all the sun you can give them.  And make sure it doesn't dry out.  That's especially important for container plants - even more so for young ones.

Thanks, yeah I called stark bros because I have a one year warranty on the tree, and I explained the problem and they said to me it sounded like anthracnose and recommended seranade garden and disease control. So, I purchased this product and sprayed the tree with it in the evening, and then the next afternoon all of the leaves were burnt up. Like totally gone. Now the directions say it can be applied anytime of the day in full sun and it will not burn the leaves. I learned the hard way and found this to not be true. So, I'm left with a stick in the ground hoping it may bud back out. They did ship me another tree though. I just kinda have my hopes up that the original one will come back.

Hello, so I got another fig from Stark bros to replace the one that I was worried about. Any advice on the roots hanging out of the bottom of the pot should I trim them off?
they look a little bad to me.

I would not cut those roots. Just put that whole plant in a larger pot.
I don't mess with roots when the plant is not dormant

Hi.everyone this is my first post but I have been a member for awhile. I think the best advice I have to offer is to lower your expectations and learn as much as you can from the the more experienced members. At the beginning of my fig excitement I purchased a few and then a few more only to find out that what I thought was a good variety where basically variants. So for me slowing down paying attention and planing for the results that I want is a better strategy. All my children and my wife think I'm off my rocker with all this fig stuff but they will come around if I ever decide to share my beauties with them. Just kidding can't wait till my expectations are real.
