Fig problem

So in the last few days this started happening to my figs (pic 1)
........ And I seen a few of these the last week or so as well (pic 2)

I'm going to treat the plants with Food grade DEarth , but can anyone tell me what is going on?
Thanks in advance for any help.

i see this in most of my mt. etna types.. the ones with fuzzy leaves..

I believe it is insect damage. I usually only see it though on those strains.... ie Hardy Chicago, MBVS, Black Bethlehem.. etc.

Next year I will be applying a neem oil treatment to see if it will stop the damage.

Hi,
Stinging Bug (sap sucking) bugs. Here I look for green shield bugs, collect them, and destroy them. There seems to be no chem against green shield bugs.
I'm trying some plants that should repel them such as "forget-me-nots", lavender, mint ...
For now I just don't understand their life cycle. Year after year, I seem to see less gsbugs. But this year, it could be due to the heat waves that we have here.
On your photo, on the first stained fig, I seem to see feet just over the fig and near the trunk . Is that an insect ? What is that "green ear" on the fig ? Could be due to the photo of course ...

The "ear" you are seeing is actually the bugs that I started seeing, I have circled it in the photo. I have no idea what they are.

The pale spots are caused by FMV... Like Tyler says it is the Mt. Etna types that show mosaic spots on fruit, also Art's Chiapetta (if infected by FMV). FMV is spread from plant to plant by the fig bud mite and the fig leaf mite, both are eriophyid species and microscopic, you need 40x magnification to even be able to see them. So if you have never had this problem before you can bet that you have fig mites now. I had never seen the spots on fruit before (because all of my Etnas from VS are totally healthy), then last year I had a major fig mite problem and the mosaic spots started showing up. Don't let anyone fool you... FMV is damaging, it reduces the productivity of a plant and the quality of the fruit.

Th einsect you see is a plant hopper, they probably do some damage but i have no idea what, they do not cause the spots though, plants of the same variety that do not have FMV do not show the spots while infected examples do.

I had the same issue with one of mine, i thought for sure all fruits would be bad, they are all currently ripening and as they ripen the spots disappear. and they taste perfectly good to me.

JDS that fig ear is a leaf hopper.  If you touch.  It will hop away 10' or more...LOL

As hoosierbanana said the spots are caused by many reasons.

I agree with Chris that when the figs ripen you won't even notice the spots.  If a particular fig looks too bad or damaged then you can thin it out.  Now is a good time to thin out figs that won't ripen this season or look damaged or undesireable to provide more energy to the figs that are left to ripen better.

Hi,
kill or remove the hopper !
For the damaged fruit, the damage is done so just let it be. But remove the insects to avoid further damage.

Thanks for all the help guys!!
