Fig Propagation Journey Twitter Feed

Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to let everyone know that I am keeping a twitter feed of my experience propagating cuttings that I took from my grandfather's tree.  He passed away in October and I took 51 cuttings off of his tree before the house was sold.  I have been documenting the progress since November.

I take photos of my 9 thriving cuttings, which are rooting well in clear plastic cups, every three or four days.  You can see the progress over the course of four months and this includes the failed cuttings with various fungi and fuzzes as well as different methods I have used and their outcomes.

This is my first go at growing these new trees so I want to have a photo journal for other new guys out there who would like to see the day to day progress.

If any of you are interested in following the progress check out the link:

I welcome any comments or guidance, I am 26, so I have a lot to learn.

Thanks!

Dom in NJ

Sorry about losing Grandad but enjoy the fig journey; it's a great way to remember someone. I have a plant from a cutting taken in our previous winter. The owner of the mother tree died just before Christmas.

He had snapped a cutting off of some guys tree in California ten years ago and stuck it I the ground and New Jersey and it exploded with growth a few years later. Old Greek new what he was doing loved his figs like crazy. The goal now is to propagate enough cuttings for my cousins and our church.

Was your Pappou Greek or the guy who owned the mother tree? Anyway, my heritage is Greek also!

Welcome Dom, sorry for your loss. I don't have Twitter. Perhaps you could post a couple pictures here. I'm in NJ also and I like collecting figs with stories. I have quite a few unknowns brought over from the old country. ( Whichever country that is :-) ). Good luck and I wish you much success!

welcome to the forum. i'm sure your grandfather will appreciate your effort although he is no longer with us.

Welcome .....and sorry about your loss...it's great to have something to remember your grandfather . Keep the tradition going.....

Hi Romablue,
Welcome to the forum.
I would give more light to the cuttings. To me, they seem to lack light .
In which type of Usda zone are you ?

Hi Dom!  Welcome to the forum from me too!  I am now following you, and a couple of your other followers too!  You did a great job on your cuttings!  Starbucks should start following you for sure!  FREE advertising!

I'll put the photos up, if you have unknowns you can send pictures of the leaves to LSU AgCenter, they have an extensive catalog and may be able to ID them.

How do your figs grow?  I'm outside AC so there are some areas where we have farms and they have great soil.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry for your loss but I'm sure he's very proud of you.  Coop951 came to us in a similar way.  There are lots of great members in NJ and there's at least 3 fig gatherings 'near' you every year.  There's one called the STATEN ISLAND FIG FEST and another at Bill’s Figs 329 Old York Road, Flemington, NJ 08822 - he sells plants and has a yearly get together.  Our own Bass typically has a get together every year near Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.  You can see his website here

For great info on growing figs see this page and look at the topics listed across the top of the page.  I agree with jdsfrance that your plants need more light.  Check out these threads for ideas on how other people do it
