Fig Season

I know its November.
But just have to ask if anyone in warmer states or another country (yes we have members outside America)
still getting GOOD tasting ripe figs?

I had 2 Col de Dame Saturday, and three Verdal Longue, still quite good. Occasional Marseilles VS, but they are not as good as whem ripened in warmer weather. Occasional Black Madeira over the last couple weeks, but won't have sweetness and flavor anymore. A few other things still have fruit, such as Black Tuscan, Violette Dauphine but the are spoiling before ripening becasue the ripening process is so slow with the cooler temps.

I've been getting a few figs that are still ripening in the greenhouse. I had one Ronde de Bordeaux that was still outside and ripened that was sweet. in the greenhouse I got Adriatic, Black Madeira, Bataglia, verdal longue, these were all very good. Now waiting on the Black Brasil it's about to ripen, but due to lack of sun they don't turn too dark.

A few days ago, my last fig treats were 2 each delicious
Ucr278-128 and Zingarella/Gypsy.

The two Brown Turkeys that have ripened this last week have tasted fine. There's one more ripe one on the tree, but the others look too small and green to make it unless the weather turns unseasonably warm for a while.

My blk unknown has been ripening a few fruits but they are smaller not as dark or sweet as earlier in year. I think my enclosed screen cuts out some of the suns rays. The temps are the same as outside because air passes through. I say this because they say pool water will be 3-5 degrees cooler in screened pool than open can any one confirm the effects of this on figs. I will be planting a least one tree outside in coming months this will let me see the difference from pots to ground and color, productivity and so forth.

I'm still getting a few Adriatic, Tena and Atreano that are still pretty good. Also Italian Everbearing.

3-1/2 Black Madeira today. Reason enough to move to California. WHAT are you all waiting for?

Jon - Jon  gotta love ya for that comment.
Have you ever had a White Christmas ?

Waiting for the kids grrrrrrr.

But i dont want to rush life away anymore.

Remember how at 1 point we all wanted to get a little older or put another way be a certain age to do certain things?

Martin. Me and the wife being from up north at times do miss the snow at Christmas time of year.
With that said, the possibility of eating fresh figs and taking a dip in the pool ain't that bad either. Come on down

i would love more than anything to move back to San Diego or anywhere else in CA for that matter, but alas, my industry is not there, and the cost of living (for what you get) is so much greater in Atlanta.  i moved to central FL after CA, then up here to Atlanta, which was like...moving from perfect weather year-round with cold ocean and no seasons, to living in a humid swamp with warm beaches and no seasons, to living in a place with warm summers, cold winters, occasional snow, no beaches, and four very distinct seasons.  i must say:  i truly do love having seasons, but i really do miss the beach (don't miss the wildfires, earthquakes or mudslides though!)

i used to live in Poway, until around 1990.  our house there backed up to mountainous terrain which was totally unsuitable to growing, and the yard wasn't much better - in fact, when you walked out our back door, you could walk for approximately 20' before hitting a steep dirt incline for the next 30' deep or so.  the house was right at the corner of Roberto Way and Luis St (92064), which is off Pomerado Rd (where Twin Peaks Dr. becomes Camino Del Norte).

to this day, I still do not know what those mountains and/or park behind our house was, but it still shows on a satellite map.  the things I do remember are...the ground was hard as rock, orangey colored, and broke away in pieces like shale...you couldn't get grass growing for anything...there were big snails everywhere, the kind you'd eat...we'd get some fierce Santa Ana winds...and I miss my neighbors, although the one I missed the most apparently moved to AL recently, so he's right around the corner, relatively speaking.

Thanks Martin:
finally a question I can answer YES to, although the quantities are nothing to write home about.
My (petite negri, or whatever it is: another research project) is my only yard tree with leaves (this after 2 light frosts) and I'm getting 2 - 3 black figs per week the past few weeks.
I will post pictures in the future about my seeming success with FIG RUST on my yard trees. (no signs of rust this year in the Hoop House either--despite another cool & WET) year.
Thanks people,
SV in NW AR

Still getting a few big brown turkey, but taste is nothing to write home about. A few still turning and all leaves are still green on that tree, so I still have hopes for one or two more. Awfully late for figs here.

I need a greenhouse!

Picked 2 blk unk last night and this one today Much sweeter as I let it ripen also pulp more red still small compared to earlier but it has been warmer again. sorry I bit into it b-4 remembering to take pic. Well off to build my auto Irrigation system for potted plants. Will posts pics when done

Despite thinking no more would ripen, I just picked three BTs a few minutes ago. I split two with my wife, and we both thought the flavor was good. My boys will split the third. Still one more nearly ripe one on the tree--needs two or three more days.
