Fig shoots as edible food?

Just saw this.  Anyone ever give it a go?

Thanks Nate.  I'm going to try that as soon as I get home.  Then I'll dry the leaves for tea.  Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the video, Nate.  I may give this a shot too.

Seems that fig trees are all usable!  Tried fig leaf tea first time last night better than persimmon to my palate.  Can't wait to steam leaf stems, thanks for sharing!

Very interesting, I may give it a try.

I hope I remember this in a few years when my trees get bigger.  I wonder if this works on ALL varieties.  Some leaves smell like cat pee..........

Nice to know you can eat many parts of the fig tree.  Somewhere I read they use the latex for cheese or yogurt?

It has been a while since I mentioned my aunt strips the bark off of young wood then skewers meat on it for shish kabob. The latex tenderizes the meat from the inside out.

I seem to be way behind in the broadning my horizon's category.

thanks for the tip, nate. i'll try this for sure. i really enjoy fig leaf tea,  so this should be good.

uhmmm, I don't see him eat it, just talking about it, LOL
I'll wait a little...

My brother-in-law said the same thing about an unknown variety his brother pulled up with a backhoe because it smelled.  Which varieties smell like cat pee?  Maybe a stray tom cat marked them?  Only ones I have smelled don't stink at all.

Well, I made steamed stems tonight. I steamed them for 20 minutes and they never got tender.  They were very tough and bitter.  I don't think I'll be making them again.
On the bright side, I was bleeding from a splinter and decided to smear the tree milk on the bloody spot and it instantly sealed it and never bled again.  The interaction of the milk and cut was not irritating at all.  I know others are more sensitive to the tree's 'milk'.

Gotta give it to you, Frank.  You're more cavalier than most of us.  I'm just gonna have to take your word for it and pass on the fig leaf stems.  Must just be a British/European thing, I guess.  Hmm, I wonder if the variety matters?

I tried stems from new growth as well as older growth stems.  I didn't notice a difference.  Variety may change the flavor but I'm not interested in trying again.
The tip where it separates from the branch is not bad, and a little tender, but this is only 1/4" piece.  Glad I tried it though.

I'm glad you tried it to.  Now I don't have to.

Nate,
Thanks for sharing this info.
I don't plan on trying it, because I'm not a big Asparagus fan.
I'm currently growing 3 different varieties of Asparagus and this spring I stumbled across a simple way of enjoying asparagus without cooking it. Let the shoot grow out and harvest the fronds when they are young. The young fronds have an intense Asparagus flavor and can be eaten raw and even added to salads.

Not planning to try it, but good to know. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Figgyfrank,
Don't hesitate to update this topic in 4 days ... so that we know you're still alive LOL ... :P ...

By the way, not an European recipe ! I never heard of someone eating the stems of the leaves - not even collecting them for animal food.
I wonder how one would expect a tree to produce good fruit while you're removing the leaves ... You can't have it all .
As for the smell, some figtrees smell better, but my wife (she's terrible at smelling and so does my little one) never complained about cat-pee smell ... Perhaps an American raised strain we don't have in Europe LOL  :P .

LOL! Reading this thread to my hubby and we were laughing so hard!

Figgyfrank, thanks for being the brave one amongst us and yes, I agree with jdsfrance, please post again so we know you are alright!

jdsfrance,You are wrong about the smell of figs. Some varieties have the smell of cat urine, you can read about on the forums gardeners Russia and Ukraine.

Nate -- thx 4 info

Frank - thx 4 saving me the hassle of trying it

Feeling a little weak and ill today...vision a little blurry as well.

I kid

Glad I could help out my forum friends by being the guinea pig.   :)

We do appreciate the effort.  And hope for your continued health

JD hates Asparagus.  Only time I get it is when he goes fishing, and I won't be trying my fig leaf stems.  Thanks for being the guinea pig Figgy Frank!!

A big mahalo to Frank for being the test subject.  You had me going there for a second though, just a second.

There's this tea they make from oleander leaves...JK, Frank.
