Fig Shuffle Mostly Over

Almost all trees are now in yard except the 30g containers as its been raining as of late and them things are heavy along and walkway now flooded with water.
Next time they need drink they get fertilizer .

Santa Cruz Dark given away to neighbor.

Both UcDavis Ischia Blacks now Dead for sure and discarded. - that hurt.

Martin I glad for you that's its over. It seems so strange that I'm about to starting eating figs and you're just feeling secure that your trees will be alright outside. I also sorry to hear about your Black Ischia passing. Mines is slow growing but it is, and it has about 12 figs on it. It still growing in a 3 gallon pot. I root pruned it earlier this year and fertilized it since, but it's just taking it's good old time about growing. It's is mostly a whip but because it was having such a hard time getting going because of the FMV, I didn't pinch or prune it this year. I plan to air layer the top next month and when I take off the top I hope it decides to branch out. It does have a small side branch just above the soil so if something goes wrong perhaps the small branch will live on. Martin please don't think that I've posted the pictures to "rub it in" so to speak. I just want you to see what mines is doing.

It's the third from the left, the second one is a native black which has grown nicely.

The top of the tree showing a cluster of figs.

The small lower branch with it's own figs.

i have one more tiny shuffle this week. the night temp is dipping below 50. my Black Madeira cutting will be taken inside for 2 days. after that i think i don't have any.

I think I'm done with the potted tree shuffle for this year too.  Next I'm planning to exhume the buried trees.

A few more weeks of the fig-shuffle up here (as well as the tomato-plant-shuffle). At least it builds strong arm-muscles for digging the vegetable gardens.
I may look scrawny, but I've never lost an arm wrestle!
Sorry, Martin, that two of your special fig trees are late.

Ah Gene no i do not think that i love pictures of dark type figs.  ; )

It's going to be 39 here tonight.  I haven't even bothered to put mine out but they have all this long, lanky growth because they're not getting enough light.

Had to put the little quart and 1 gallon pots in garage last night it got about 39 sme as above poster and not take chance .

This is when you wish you had a greenhouse that will open and close from the top and all sides.

Time to call inspector Gadget.

Diesler I live in Chicago, Z-5 as well and I was wondering at what temps do you usually leave your fig trees outside? and what temps do you look for bringing them inside? Like whats the minimum temp to keep them outside?

Thanks,
Mike

I leave mine outside if I can be certain it will be over 7 Celsius or 44 f, I am too nervous about frost, which can still occur at 5 degrees C.

Mike it depends on the type of plant and its size.
Some of the precious ones i baby for a couple years.
Usually i leave bigger plants out to about 42 .
Last night it hit 39 and all were out except the smaller ones and were ok but for me thats pushing it.

I do not keep breba crop unless i miss one here and there mind you.

I am trying to start a few Black Ischia cuttings from Jon. I can put your name on one of them if you like.

James i dont mean to sound picky but i would only be interested in
the UcDavis Ischia Black which Jon does not have to offer i believe .
Otherwise i would have to pass .

I would make you a trade offer on a rooted growing UcDavis Ischia Black plant.

That offer stands to first person to contact me .
Pm's open.

what's special about UC Ischia Black?

pete

The  MOST severe FMV [stubburn] case that I have ever encountered...

[I also have heard that is one of the very best tasting ripe fig fruit.]

Bullet types - what's special about UC Ischia Black?

UcDavis Ischia Black for me personally is the problem child of all  figs tree's.

Its hard to explain why mess with it but for me its a personal challenge and thus im attracted to its extreme difficulty it has with FMV compared to any fig tree i ever grown with FMV.

Hence my offer to trade for a UcDavis Ischia Black and not anything else labeled ischia black from another source.
