Fig suitable for zone 9

Hi figlovers,
I'm new to growing fig.just joined this forum
I live in zone 9 and my space is limited
I want your recommendations for zone 9 to grow in containers
Thank you very much
Mala

It would help to know your location. Z9 climates vary a lot. What are your summers like hot and dry, hot and humid, mild and ???? Are your winters wet or dry? Both California and Florida have many Z9 climates but they have much different growing conditions. Even within CA Z9 varies widely due to coastal influence.

Mala, your info says you live in California, but even California has many different growing zones as Steve mentioned. Your Sunset Climate zone for California might give us a little more information about what to recommend. You can find that out here:

Also, what kind of fig do you think you would like? Green? Black? Yellow? Berry flavored? Sugar or honey flavored? There are many different kinds to choose from.

Hi Fignutty and Altadena Mara
Thanks for the reply...I should have given more details about my location I live in Sanjose , CA area and I think that's Sunnset zone 15 ( which I figured out using link, thanks)
I'm new to growing figs and tasted only store bought figs which are some times tasteless and l decided to grow my own.I have experience in growing flowers and vegetables but never grown fig or any fruit trees.Though I have big backyard it is mostly covered by big tree so my all day sunny area is limited.its rented house and I want to take my fig trees with me when I have my own home.So I need grow them in containers.I need a good tasting ,less fussy fig to grow in containers. Thanks for your patience and time.

Hello from San Jose!

They pretty much all grow well here. I would look for a Violette de Bordeaux or Panache. Both taste excellent and are easy to find.

I would second Ohjustaguy’s suggestions of Panache and Violette de Bordeaux. Both are top figs and easy to find in nurseries. You’re in Fig Paradise there so anything will do well. Since Panache and VdB are both berry flavored figs, you might want to think about honey or sugar flavored figs as well to balance a collection for flavors and ripening times. Pete’s Honey is a good honey fig and easy to find as well.

Harvey is not too far from you but is more inland in central CA. If you want to explore other fig trees, his website might be helpful in terms of fig descriptions, ripening times and links to some great pictures and comments at: http://www.figaholics.com/cuttings.htm

The Figs4Fun Varietal Information website is more for Southern California around the San Diego area but would be helpful as well at: http://figs4fun.com/Varieties.html

I'm Zone 9 in the Bay Area, too, and definitely Violette de Bordeaux grows well here.  Black Missions, too.  I'd even add White Marseille to the list.

Hi There Neighbor,
I am in the SJ area as well. I can't tell u the most productive as I'm still trying to figure that out for myself. Neighbors have Mission trees that are ridiculously productive. For me, so far, LSU Purple, Conadria, White Ischia, both Sal's, Chicago Hardy, Panache, Galbun, Celeste, Petit Negri and Lebanese Red have been been very good producers in pots. As far as taste, the Mission fig is a great tasting fig. Not trendy, or rare, but produces buckets of tasty figs. For me I will be tasting figs from most of my trees for the first time this year. I'll let u know what tastes best when they ripen. Saying that it's hard to find a fig prettier than Panache. Seems to like the climate here. I have a couple of extra rooted cuttings of various figs if ur interested. Figure out what u want and I can tell u if I have it or am growing it. Good luck!

Hi Fellow fig lovers,
