Fig Tree Help!!

I have a potted Italian white fig tree. This is my 3rd year with it. When I first got it it was only about 2' tall and basically a stick with a few nubs on it. Now it is about 4' tall by about 3' wide with lots of leaves and very healthy looking. I transferred it into a plastic 55 gallon drum this spring because last year the roots were all visible and shooting up into the air in the old pot. I didn't have any figs last year and still no figs. I see small bumps that maybe figs forming but I saw the same thing last year. I have fertilized it with fish fertilizer then some bone meal and garden lime. Is this normal for this variety or am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions are greatly apreciated!

Not so much a problem, but some varieties do that.  Then again, you can take a cutting from it and that tree may produce on the first year.  You just never know.  What you can do is start 'pinching' tips to force bud break or fig development below.  This may help:

It sounds to me like you are pushing the fig too fast.
A 3 yr old fig tree in a 55gal container wow.  That fig has lots of space to grow roots and accompanying growth but has no time for figs.  Long term you may end up witha very nice tree but short term few figs.

I like to up pot 1 or 2 sizes at time.  This gives the fig roots some room to grow and gives the fig a chance to dry out so it doesn't stay wet.
When it goes dormant you may want to root prune it and go down in container size so the roots fit comfortably.

Figgy Frank, thanks for the tip. I pinched the buds a few weeks ago and I know have a bunch of figs forming and new branches!!!
Thanks again!!!

That's fantastic!  I hope you have a great harvest this fall!
