Hi Members,
I put my 10 ft Desert King in large container outdoor (second year) as per below photo. In order to avoid moving in & out during winter time and spring time etc. Can I cut out the bottom part of the plastic container and let the container continue to sit on ground, so that the roots can go in to the ground like I plant it in ground. The reason why I did not put it in ground because my back yard area that I wanted to plant is not good for drainage especially during raining reason. I am afraid my fig tree will be killed when so many water sitting there for too long time. My flower bed is abt 4" above ground level already.

The above is recommended by one of the local nursery. Any idea or suggestion will be much appreciated.

Hi Alan,

Tks for your respond. My pot is 21" wide and 17" Height. This summer in Vancouver is short of water due to less rain than usual. Winter can rain 4 to 5 days a week. Is that good for dormancy ?

Hi pacifica,
In a container, you need to keep a balance between the size of the pot and the dimensions of the tree.
That tree is too high for her container (and too high even for a managed tree in ground ) . In the long run she will struggle.
I keep my in ground trees under or around 7' . 10' that is 3' too much for me - it is just my opinion and my way of doing, you're free to let her grow more :) .
If the tree was mine, since she is a breba only, I would wait next year to harvest the brebas and I would cut her back to 5' or 6' .
With the cuttings you can play and make more trees and the original tree will spend less energy "feeding wood (the trunk)" and use more water and nutrients to "feed fruits".

Of course if you don't cut her back, one day, you'll be at 15' ...

Hi jdsfrance & rcantor :  When is a good time to put half of the container (without base) in ground to enable more healthy roots which is better for fruit harvest  and long run etc.? I schedule to proceed in mid Oct when Desert King is about to begin dormant or I better do it in early Spring. Here in Vancouver, B. C. Canada will have more rain in winter time starting from end Oct till mid April. Your recommendation on this will be much appreciated.

Pacifica,

The answers to all your questions are in this thread: http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/the-in-ground-pot-growing-method-4728896?highlight=ground+pots&pid=40449478

I would wait until the spring to cut the bottom. When the next dormancy period hits.. you dig up the plant, cut the roots, prune the tree & move it into a warmer location. During the months leading up to dormancy, I would do some air layers to maximize your breba crop yield as France suggested. You'll have to prune the tree when you dig it up anyway, so you might as well do some air layers, and benefit from Desert King's exceptional brebas.

As for this winter... It's too late for all of that if you're dormancy begins in mid October, so I would just put the tree in a warmer location during dormancy this winter, and follow the steps of that thread I linked when the spring begins.

Hi Ross : Thanks for your valuable information. You got the points that I should wait till early Spring since winter is on the way to Vancouver, B.C. no later than end Oct.

The link that you provided is not working or valid, can you please resend again with many thanks.

Do you think I can proceed air layer of my Desert King right now while dormancy will usually begin mid to end Oct here in Vancouver, B. C. ??? This is because if I do it now till early Spring, I can reduce the size of my DK from 10 ft to 6 ft and will be easy for me to plant only 6 ft DK in ground in early Spring .

If that doesn't link doesn't work... this thread is doomed.
