It's great that you can keep your grandpa's trees in the family.  

They are very special to me because I grew up eating the same figs but they wasn't brought over by our family when they came to the US or anything. One came from a old foreign lady in the 70's and other was given to my grandfather by a church member a few years later who said it's an old fig that dates back to the Exodus of the Israelites out of Egypt. 

Yep. That's what brings back memories!

Thanks for sharing Gary, when did you start collecting fig trees? 

Happy to share, Daniel. I got a Black Jack at a local nursery in January of 2013, and it did so well, I was encouraged to seek out more. Shocking how easy that is. I joined the California Rare Fruit Growers, and at their scion exchange, I got many different cuttings. Found the forum, and got more. Ebay some too. This part of California is not as hot as SoCal, or the Central Valley, though the fig trees grow like crazy. My plan is to find out what varieties taste the best to me and do well here. I am also planting caprifigs in ground, so that I hopefully can introduce wasps here. So far, 6 in-ground trees, with 15-20 more by Spring. In containers they just grow too fast. Of course, I have 30-40 apple varieties, pears, persimmons, peaches, berries, etc. It is the home of Luther Burbank around here.

On your list you have RDB (not) Is there a story with that?

Thats awesome Jeff, there are many others in zone 6a growing figs but it isn't going to be easy, Winter protection is key be it wrapping or storing the plants somewhere.  I hope everything works out for you and you have an abundant crop of figs next year.

Will, I tried RDB 3 times now 1 cutting each time. first one rotted, the second time fungus gnats killed the rooted cutting, 3rd time was a charm until it fruited. I had noticed the leaves looked similar to celeste but figured it was just a young plant then it fruited and produced a small fig also similar to celeste. Oh well, that's how it goes sometimes. 

I think this is complete.  The ones in bold I am planning on propagating next year.

Thanks James, thats very impressive will any of the figs you are moving to Denver be tested in ground or do you have any figs you plan on trying in ground in Denver?  

I really like the idea of the horizontal espalier in an underground trench.  Unfortunately, I do not have ground space to try it..

Hi Daniel, I only started in 2011 and I intend to test many of these in ground (protected Japanese espalier form), but so far my entire collection is in 1-5 gallon containers that I store in a room in my basement.  That room has some air exchange to the outside so as to maintain about 40F all winter.

Plus several varieties I'm actively rooting and loads of seedlings, most of which I'm trialing outdoors.  I'm hoping to cross breed plants for hardiness if I can get my Gillette to set some useable pollen. 

Very nice Greg. You obtained many new varieties this past year I see.I love the fact you are trying to develope new fig varieties and live so far up north. I have some seeds I collected from about 10-12lbs of wasp damaged figs over a 4 weeks period from many different plants throughout the property. out of all those figs I only had about a half gram of sinkers or around 100 seeds . If you'd like I can send you about 20 seeds to try. I'm not sure if they will grow but they did sink and I've heard of non caprified figs producing viable seed in the past. let me know if you are interested and I'll be happy to send you some.
