Welcome! There are many members in NY & NJ. If someone in a colder zone, like PA or Chicago, says that says a fig is good it will certainly be good for you. Check out posts by Herman2 as he's made a list. Another store, Trees of Joy is further away but worth a look. I think Bass, the owner, has also made a list. You can look at his list of plants on the website to see what he grows. Search on their user names and go back a few years. EJP3 is another very experienced member near you. You also have figs growing in people's backyards to glean from. Check out threads started by AscPete for his adventures in fig land.
Jon has a fig called Encanto Honey or Unknown OC with the description, "Hearty Flavor". That's a great fig as are Champagne, which may or may not be the same as LSU Gold (both are good) and the best of all of mine is called Panache. It has green and yellow stripes. The drawback to Panache is that it can split (but still taste good) in high humidity and the skin is thicker than most. Battaglia Green and JH Adriatic are also great figs.
Desert King is a good one to get along with another light fig because you'll get fruit earlier with it and later with the other. DK only ripens its breba (or first) crop. The second crop will fall off.
Salce, Lattarolla, Atreano and Rockaway Green come very highly recommended by people near you or colder but I haven't tried them yet.
In warmer climates Col de Dame Blanc, Samoa Sunshine, Smith, Conadria, Alma, White Triana, Stella, Hollier, Florea, Ischia Green, Strawberry Verte and Emerald Strawberry (143-36 or UCR 143-36) come highly recommended. I may be able to comment on some this year but my trees are still young so they will improve over the years.
Why no darks? Beware, there's one of our grandfather members who may try to convert you to the dark side...
