Fig tree pics for Long Island

Hi all I am super new to fig stuff so sorry I'm so ignorant. I live in nassau county on Long Island which appears to be zone 7a. I looked at the what figs grow well where post in the beginner thing but I have a specific question. I had a kadota tree (small) that gave me like 8 figs before it died this winter the figs were bad tasting. I am looking for a white or yellow fig tree that will do well in my zone.

Welcome:

The learning curve is short and sweet.  Research topics on this forum for all your answers.  This forum will be your text book on what, and, what not to do.

Fig sources:  Try: Zaino's and Hick's both garden centers I think, are in Westbury.  For a good "white" fig, try "Atreano", a difficult-to-beat, large, golden-yellow fig. Zaino's might still have some fig trees.

Good luck.

Welcome to the forum Michael! No apologies - lots of info on this wonderful forum - read ,read ,read and ask questions . That's how we learn !

Last week Hick's got a new shipment in after selling out their stock very early.
Hick's had quite a few Negronnes ( aka Violette de Bordeaux) , a great tasting dark fig. Are you going to grow in ground or in pots?

I would call both nurseries to make sure they have some left.

I am definately going to get one of those Negronne as I have been reading and they seem to grow well and taste good. Thanks! I have a massive brown turkey fig tree which started all this which came with my house. It took a major beating this winter though and is only starting some new growth now. I recently bought a 5 foot mission, 3 foot mission, 4 foot black jack and a Chicago hardy. I am told by my wife to calm down so I think I can only squeeze in a few more. The negronne was one but I also wanted a Adriatic or verte. No one seems to sell these by me so in thinking they won't do to well on Long Island?

Oh and everything is planted except the mission trees because I am waited for the removal of two large bushes on the south side of my house

Welcome!  There are many members in NY & NJ.  If someone in a colder zone, like PA or Chicago, says that says a fig is good it will certainly be good for you.  Check out posts by Herman2 as he's made a list.  Another store, Trees of Joy is further away but worth a look.  I think Bass, the owner, has also made a list.  You can look at his list of plants on the website to see what he grows.  Search on their user names and go back a few years.  EJP3 is another very experienced member near you.  You also have figs growing in people's backyards to glean from.  Check out threads started by AscPete for his adventures in fig land.

Jon has a fig called Encanto Honey or Unknown OC with the description, "Hearty Flavor".  That's a great fig as are Champagne, which may or may not be the same as LSU Gold (both are good) and the best of all of mine is called Panache.  It has green and yellow stripes.  The drawback to Panache is that it can split (but still taste good) in high humidity and the skin is thicker than most.  Battaglia Green and JH Adriatic are also great figs.

Desert King is a good one to get along with another light fig because you'll get fruit earlier with it and later with the other.  DK only ripens its breba (or first) crop.  The second crop will fall off.

Salce, Lattarolla, Atreano and Rockaway Green come very highly recommended by people near you or colder but I haven't tried them yet.

In warmer climates Col de Dame Blanc, Samoa Sunshine, Smith, Conadria, Alma, White Triana, Stella, Hollier, Florea, Ischia Green, Strawberry Verte and Emerald Strawberry (143-36 or UCR 143-36) come highly recommended.  I may be able to comment on some this year but my trees are still young so they will improve over the years.

Why no darks?  Beware, there's one of our grandfather members who may try to convert you to the dark side...

Negronne is one of the the best figs IMHO as well as Battaglia. I'm growing them in large pots.

Welcome to forum neighbor.

Of course Negronne is dark so it's always a good idea to research our suggestions...

Yeah no i am going to buy two trees one Negronne and one green or white or yellow. i though it would be cool to have a more diverse blend of trees (not all dark). But hey if the dark ones are better ill just get those instead.

Thanks everybody! I bought two trees a Negronne from zainos in westbury (thanks Pattee!) another nursery near me had quite a few varieties and I got an Atreano also. They also had a Boston dark that looked very interesting
