hi everyone, any one ever try growing fig trees from seeds? I see on e-bay that some are for sale.

Fig trees do not grow true to variety from seed.

There is at least a couple threads of growing from seed, use the search feature, they are pretty easy to find.

But you may get something special and worth waiting for. :)

Just don't buy seeds from out of the country (Turkey, for example). the USDA WILL come knocking to confiscate them.

Seeds are like your children, half mom, half dad. They will never be mom or dad. You may get a good tasting fig but that is less than 10%. You will get on average 50% male trees. The others will be split between Smyrna, San Pedro and common. Of the common figs you will not likely get a fig tasting better than the parent but it could happen. You will also only get a common fig if the male is a persistant otherwise it's smyrna and capris. Is it really worth the time and expense? Up to you.

I 'found' 4 trees growing wild where I work. Dug them up and potted them 5 years ago. One finally put on fruit this year. I think one parent was Mission as it tasted and looked very close to mission but was just a bit watery and diluted. With time will it improve? We'll see. For the other trees, I'm still waiting. Hope to know before I die!

thank you sue , would be years before they fruit ,if they fruit at all . I need to buy trees so I could pick figs  ,as I don't have any yet .

I have over 100 seedlings growing thanks to Igor. I plan to plant a hedge row of figs and hopefully introduce wasp. Time will tell and by planting them in ground there will be little expense after the initial effort of getting them up and through the winter in the greenhouse. Hopefully they will be big enough to plant in the spring.
