Fig trees in Istanbul

I have been walking around Istanbul and in almost all corners of the city there is always a fig tree growing somewhere.

Here are a few pictures

I will try to do more pictures in the next few days and also some videos

Enjoy your trip and fig exploring.
I like the leaves on the plant in the 3rd picture.

Must be exciting to find fig trees readily. Hope you have a chance to try the figs there. Bass in his website mentioned a good fig from Bursa, south of Istanbul known as "Bursa Black" -- hope you get to try it. Happy holidays.

Are you taking any cuttings?

I will recommend another place which I found figs *everywhere*

This year, my wife and I had to both work in Europe, she in France, me in Germany.

Our first days were spent in Nice and Cannes.  Both ahd a lot of figs, but I was absolutely blown away walking and driving around St. Paul de Vence, France.  Literally, if you drive from St Paul de Vence to Cannes, you would easily see 2,000 or more figs, and this is a very short distance!

I think I drove my trip companions nuts!  My fig radar or "figdar" was going off left and right.

"There's a fig!"

"There's a fig!"

"There's a fig!"

Amazing.  Such a beautiful thing!!

Of course, I do this at home also.  I love the shape, color and look of the fig leaf.

Rafed: I am not taking any cuttings with me as there are legal requirements when someone arrives by plane to Canada.

satellitehead: Yes in ''fig heavens'' they are in every spot. Here they grow like weeds...

Have a safe trip and thanks for sharing. Looks like you are having great weather also.

Michal,
hows the weather there at this time of year i ask as i was wondering will you be able to taste any figs where you are at .
Have a safe trip and look forward to more pictures when you have time, also thanks for taking the time to share those pictures with us.

Very nice pictures of some beautiful trees. Maybe you could mail some cuttings home---you might just get them. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your trip.

The weather is around 32F/15C and this is much better then back home in Canada. I was concerned that it would be raining but it has been very sunny since I arrived. It will probably be much warmer when I will travel down south.

The only down side is that I have been sick since yesterday and I have been spending most of the day inside my hotel room resting. Luckily I do not have the swine flu as the doctor told me it was just a virus!

Also, Monday I have an appointment at the fig research center in Aydin and this should be very interestin.

For the figs I have only found dried ones. The main season for fig selling is probably over... Some of the wild trees have figs at the moment but they get snatched by the birds when they are ripe.

fatnsassytexan: Yes I could

Michal, it looks and sounds like you are having a a great time on your fig hunting expedition and we all hope it is fruitful.  Are there many common type fig trees in Turkey?  Last year I was there near the ruins of Ephesus and the surrounding valleys were covered in fruit trees, apricot, pomegranate and fig trees everywhere.  The dried figs  in Turkey were very good and inexpensive.  Thanks for the pictures and keeping us posted on your travels.
