Fig trees starting to arrive

  • PHD

I went to a nursery today here in North Jersey and saw the first fig trees for sale, spring is coming!! They were the usual varieties (BT, Celeste, Hardy Chicago, Italian Everbearing) but they were large and well branched very nice looking, I was tempted to buy the Hardy Chicago but I passed since I already have one. It was nice to see all the fruit trees especially the figs out, cant wait for the season to begin.

Ditto, im very anxious just not sure if my back is.

I'm taking all my figs outside tomorrow.  It looks like the next week they're predicting lows in the 40's with highs in the 50's and 60's.  That at least will give my back a week to rest if they need to come in next Sunday.

I think I'm going to take my figs outside also. This has been the best winter I can ever remember but something tells me mother nature is going to send us one last parting gift. I still remember the blizzard in 93 on March 20 when we got 20 inches.

They arrived in my area, 6wks ago! It's going to be a good year for figs.

Our local nurseries started putting out bare root fruit trees in mid Jan. and figs about mid Feb.

FYI: Harbor Freight has their parking lot sale this weekend. They have a small 4 wheeled mover's dolly for $8.39. I got one last year and it works well for moving pots on smooth surfaces- much easier on your back!

I picked up two Brown Turkey trees today at Tractor Supply for 20.ea. Not real interested in BT but these were quite large and healthy. I picked out two that had some nice triple trunks. I have alot of fig scionwod that I plan to graft this spring. These BTs will make perfect rootstocks ;) .

I know this is an old thread but where in North Jersey did you find the large trees?  Are they 5 gallon size or larger?  Thanks!

Those trees  I believe were at the Fairfield Garden Center, they were 3 gallons. If your looking for anything larger Bill's Figs in Flemington is your best bet
