Fig Trees Starting to AWAKE

Hi All I haven't posted in a while but have been trying to keep up with all posts.
Well starting to notice some bud break and leaves forming so the time is near for season to kick in. Temps here have been mid 70-80 and night time down to high 50's but mostly 60's. Here are a few Pics taken today. Want to wish all a fruitful season
Sal
Unknown was to be a VDB but I doubt will see this season

Overview of my figs which I pruned back pretty hard this season. I will likely not have many breba but am hoping for a good main crop and maybe even 2 on some with an early start. Cold hit early this year in Dec. so dorrmancy was early and wake up time seems to be earlier if that make sense

Hi Sal ,
nice temperatures you are having there !
Look forward to your pictures this season.

Congrats. Have a good year Sal.
It will be happening soon, like 45 more days here.

looks good sal just need a few more weeks hopefully I can start a few in the greenhouse in the next 2-3 weeks. Come on march 15th......

Hello Sal, it is good to see you are still around.  I've been looking for some of your post.

My figs in my garage and in my greenhouse are waking up.  Friday it was 75 degrees here in Charlotte, and 68 yesterday and today.  I think Spring has sprung in Charlotte.  My wife thinks we are in for one more cold snap.  I hope not.  Last year, Spring came around March.  Here we are in February and we are having very warm weather!  Wow!

How bout those figs!!!

Sal, I was going to post the same thread.  I noticed all of mine waking up last night when we came home.  About 40% of my trees have fully open terminal buds, some have leaves that are almost 3/4" wide.  Another 20% are starting to break.  The other 40% ... look like they're not far off.

I would normally be happy, but I know we're bound to get another snow between now and end of April.....

This is the first year I actually have trees to wake up:)...So am still sorta new to taking care of fig trees.

But am curious, once there is leafing out, do I need to put it out in the sun or still leave it out in the garage in the dark?  The weather here is also in the 60's-70s but still cold at night some nights.

Eun, the faster you introduce them to full sun, the less problem you will have with "leaf scorch" (sunburnt leaves) later.  If you keep them in the garage and let them fully leaf out, you will need to slowly acclimate them to sun later (which is a tedious process).

I have about the same weather as you here in Atlanta.  What I do is this ...

Check the monthly weather at weather.com:

http://www.weather.com/weather/monthly/30316

(look at the URL - replace the 5-digit zip code at the end with your own)

Also check the 10-day forecast every 4-5 days.

Any time the temps are slated to be below 40 degrees overnight, I recommend you pull your new trees in for their safety.  Due to microclimates you may have in your specific area, or your weather conditions, it's possible you'll suffer frost damage on your trees, and frost is #1 killer of new growth (my personal opinion).

Everything here is paradise has been leafing out for about 4 weeks. No stopping them now.

Tis the season to begin anew, love to see figs starting to leaf, mine also just started.

Time to feed them. I already put some mix down for the potted figs.

When are you going to plant the veggies?

Great photos Sal......as usual!

We are somewhat farther back than you, but it shouldn't be much longer for us what with the temps in the 70's

Thanks

My pics aren't as good (BlackBerry), but they convey the message, I think.

I'm at about 80% broken terminal buds, and about 20% being stubborn (but swelling), mostly on my larger 3-5gal trees.

A few green fig buds, but no leaves yet. I'm often surprised by how long it seems to take for spring to arrive in Tucson.

Forget them back-breaking figs (at least here in NJ)!

Notice that nice/warm enclosed swimming pool --aahhh...
[what else good life may come with that?]

Congrats and good for you Sal.
FL climate is a heaven for most plants
(OK, maybe too moist/swampy).

But what you show is not typical to us average fig Joe/Jane...

Looks good Sal.

Just woke a couple of mine before I left three weeks ago. Just got home and I'm happy to say they are looking good. More into getting them to grow than producing figs this year.

They are two of my top figs too.

I'll be in your area in a couple weeks too Sal.

Hey Jason, I see you double mark your trees.  Do I see some marked using a label maker?  Any problem with them fading?  I double mark mine too using plastic markers and aluminum tags.

Actually, I don't double-mark.  Anything above and beyond the white printed sticky labels flagged around the stick was put there by others.

How we do winter.

Somebody's getting awfully cocky about his climate, here and it's making me nervous.  Don't go jinxing yourself, there.  But don't worry--I'm having an anxiety attack for you so you don't have to go doing that.....  ;)

Showoff!

Wahhhhh!!!!
And I'm still looking at a foot of snow on the ground, maybe more to come in the next few days, as the temp oscilates around 0'C.

Thanks for all the well wishes, hopefully it will be a good year as I'm looking forward to try some new varieties I acquired last season. Ronde de Bordeaux, VDB, and Panache which were to immature to ripen fruit last season. I'm hoping my Sal Corleone produces again as the few fruits I got were very good and my Verdal Longue also was very good for a few fruits in first season. I just want to again thank all who I have traded with or purchased plants from and a big thanks to Jon for providing this forum and making scion available which you can not find at your local nursery (:

As far as the garden I'm about 2-3 wks late but plan to get somme things in ground this weekend
Sal

Sal, hope you don't mind my sharing bud breaking photos in your thread.

Update:  Here's 4 weeks later, 100% bud break, I lost zero trees over the winter (!!! HELL YEAH !!!).

I had a something in the garage fall on top of my GM#1 (Malta Purple Red) and knock all but two leaves off of it, I was cussing like crazy.  The rest seem to really be liking these 80ยบ temps these last two days.

Even the JH Adriatic bareroot I received recently from a kickass figfriend is breaking buds galore.  There's also a red-leaved bareroot peach in that picture if you look from another kickass figfriend ;)  or peachfriend?  ;)

Jason, looking good. Here are some pics I took this morning. The last picture shows the only 2 breba I see so far on my Conadria. Hope all members figs are doing well. I met a fellow member who lives close to me and had a real nice visit he has been a member for many years but does not post so maybe he will start to chime in. I'm looking forward to visit him soon and and share some figs and ideas.

And just about 80 miles south of Sal, there are a few more early starters, these are in ground and I don't really expect much from them, brown turkey, green ischia, black mission and a couple of large ficazzana white, accompanied by a few pineapples. Actually the pineapples are beating the breba's this year...
