I am on the same boat, I plant couple fig trees in ground few months ago and they missed breba fig, so I don't want to miss main crop. However, They do not grow well and worry me.
My guess is that, Depend on type of fig trees, It has a time clock, When the right time come, it will evaluate its nutrition situation and decide that to bear fig or not.
If it has lots of nutrition, It will grow more roots, Then grows baby leaves, and If it still have nutrition leftover, It bears figlet.
10 days ago, I gave them some cheap tomato fertilizer with some epsom salt and lime,
so far, hardy Chicago has responsed and each leaves have figlets formed under each leaves for last 3 days.
one 1 Ft tall potted "Desert king" has responsed as well and bears one breba fig 4 days ago
There are other fig trees response as well but I need few more days to confirm that it is leave buds or figlets.
Other known trick is that, you can take the tips off ( baby buds), I think that it will force it to put extra nutrition to form figlet, It is my plan B.
Anyway, I am quite new and always fail, , I hope some expert will shine some lights on it.
