Verdal is a common one in the fig variety database.

Spanish is my 2nd language, and Spain is possibly my favorite country on the planet, some place I would love to move some day.  I want to share with you some of the words above that translate to english, and some Spanish history that may help.

Of course, 'negra' is black, 'blanca' is white.

Temprana = early, Tardia = late.

Cuello de dama Murciana = (in French) Murcian 'col de dame' = Very possible it's the same or a sibling/relative to the variety we know as Col De Dame ("neck of the lady"), which is also in the F4F variety database (also, see Axier post farther down for Coll de Dama reference)

Murcia is a city near Barcelona in southeastern Spain, some folks speak Catalan there instead of Spanish, so direct translation using a Babelfish won't handle the translation.  Anyways, Murcia is a place, and "murciana" as used above designates "Murcian" or "of Murcia".

pellejo de toro = "bull's skin"

napolitana = Neapolitan

troncal = main

pajar = "Barn", parajo="bird".  adding era suggests prefix "one who does" or "one of" or "one for", is the best way I can explain.  again, see Axier's post a few down from here.

huevo de toro = "bull egg", probably a black ovular big fig about the size of an egg.

jeronimo = Hieronymite ("a hermit").  this is important because of all of the Iberian hermits in Spain (and Portugal) from the 1300's forward.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hieronymites

Because I am poor with Catalan, there may be other obvious relationships or words I am missing from your lists.  I have a distant (but good) friend living just outside Barcelona, and can ask her if these names mean anything to her.  It may reveal some other relationships to named figs here, such as the 'col de dame' relationship I mentioned above.

Also, just to give you more to run with, here is a longer list of Spanish figs:
http://www.diclib.com/cgi-bin/d1.cgi?l=en&base=flowers_es&page=showid&id=9723

Note that
'higo' = fig
'higuera' = fig tree

I do not know the difference between ñoral, iñoral, añoral and eñoral, but these are all prefixes used before some figs.

Hope this helps more than confuses!

Thanks for the translation.
I understand some Spanish, been to Spain a couple times before my addiction problem (with figs)I love the country.
Here's a link of the figs of the catalan country. For those of you that not familiar with this site.figs of catalan

Very interesting,
Mucho gracias

Bass,
I love that pic of that fat/old/knobbed/gnarled cut-down fig tree trunk, but STILL surviving; figs ARE real tough!

The ultimate drastic pruning that I have ever seen;
- caution! - think twice before trying this at home...

Bass heres another link I had saved from figs from the Canary Islands of Spain.

http://www.rinconesdelatlantico.com/num3/35_higueras.html

I had allot more of figs of other parts of spain but that was on my other computer. Majorca Island of spain also has allot of different varieties.

Wow - there is some very interesting material being posted today by several folks. Thanks for sharing your findings. It is very good to see this information - material that is generally very difficult to find due to language issues.

Thanks!
Ingevald

Gorgi,
I've only seen this drastically pruned tree dune on Olive trees, but I would think someone was trying to kill that fig tree.

Nelson,
Thanks for that info on the Canary island fig, I spent time in Gran Canaria, the largest island and been to almost every spot on the island, I only saw one or two fig trees. It is a very dry island with lots of cactus. But the other islands may have more vegetation.

Is there a way to translate those PDF's to English for those of us who don't speak fluent Spanish?

-Pequeno Juan

Bass, the figs are cultivated in Spain since time out of mind and the nomenclature is a very crazy thing. Many times the same fig has a different name in each village, and other many times the same name is used for different figs. Really a craziness!

Spain is an small country, from North to South 1000 Kms, but is a very contrasted country. There are 4 languages; Spanish, Catalan, Galician and  Basque. Despite the small size, the climate is very different from ones regions to others. For example, I live in the Basque country, in the North coast of Spain. Here the climate is cloudy, rainy and mild (no hot in summer, no cold in winter), the center of Spain is dry, cold in winter and hot in summer. The South is dry, very hot in summer and very mild winters, and finally, the Mediterranean region (Murcia is in the Mediterranean coast), one of the best region for figs, sunny and no so hot like the south.

Jason, good explanation, but I have to do some clarifications. I hope don't be bothered by it.

Currently, Murcia is not a Catalan province, and only a very few villages of the North of Murcia know and speak Catalan, due to Alicante province proximity (in Alicante the people know and speak Catalan).

Murcia has a very sunny and dry climate, good for figs, like many other provinces in Spain.

Regarding the fig names, "Pajarera" derives from "pájaro" = bird, not from "pajar"=barn. "Pajarera" could be "a tree which attracts to birds", In my opinion all fig trees are "pajareros" :-)).

"Cuello de dama"="Col de dame"="Coll de Dama".

"Fig" in Spanish is "higo" not "hige".

Nelson, as you say, Majorca island is a very good place for figs, better than Canary islands. There are a lot of fig varieties in Majorca, some are good native varieties.

Another very interesting thread, thanks bass. Spain is rich with fig varieties. Some very good ones as well. I don't have any Spanish at all. I may look into getting a couple Spaniards for my collection. ciao

Hey Axier do you know where one could find a list of figs that Montserrat Pons grown in Majorca ?

I am sorry Nelson, but I don't know where you can find that list.
I know that he has hundred of varieties in his big orchard but I don't know what varieties.
I have been several times to Majorca but I don't know her orchard.

Hey Nelson, you may find this small gallery fun to look at: http://www.photoshelter.com/c/obcn/gallery/the-father-of-figs/G0000zlAAjgnjbBo/

There are also some nice pictures of figs starting at the main gallery: http://www.photoshelter.com/c/obcn

Also, have you access to a copy of "Les figueres a les Illes Balears"? (Montserrat, "The figs of the Balearic Islands").  Maybe there will be at least a partial list here.

Oh, and Axier, thanks for the clarifications, these are very necessary.  I will modify my post to point to yours.

'hige' was a typo.
'parajo' - this should have been obvious to me, but i forget that barn and bird are only one letter difference. ;)
please forgive my ignorance of Murcia ("murthya"), this is one place i have not been.

Are you of Spain, or simply in love with it as I am?

Also, do you know the difference between ñoral, iñoral, añoral and eñoral, I do not know these words.  I assume they are Catalan, because I do not recognize them in Spanish.  Of course, my Spanish is limited to that of a 12- or 13-year-old.  =)

Axier lives in Spain and is a Spanish native. Search his name on the other forum and you can see some real interesting posts that he's made. His collection is amazing!

-Little John

Thanks for your compliments Little John, but unfortunately my collection is only modest. I don't have much place for figs in my small orchard.
Regarding my posts, thanks to many wise people in this and GW forum I have learned a lot, but I have many things to learn yet!

Jason, Ñora is a Murcia village. Ñoral= "from Ñora", the other words are deformations of the Ñoral word.

Thanks Jason how the hell you find these?

I often ask myself the same thing when I see posts from folks like you and Bass!!  "How the hell do you guys find these things?!"

I guess I have a knack for using search engines.  There is so much content out there which has been indexed over the years.

I actually have 4-5 more pages open on my work computer with more leads on Montserrat and possible literature and pictures of his book, but won't be back at the office till monday.  If I find it, I will post (if legal) anything of interest that could help educate others.

I tried to find an e-book or electronic version of his book, but I am lost after many hours of searching.  I found some other things that may be of interest - you will need to use Google translator to read them, the translations from that tool are a bit poor, but they give you a good idea.  I feel like there is some good information to mine in these links, and they will give you a great view into the man, the region, the history.
