fig varieties from Spain

I have a headache now, how can their be so many different varieties. I vote for a Fig DNA Test worldwide.

I suspect while there are many different types of figs, many are actually the same with a different name in different places of the world  and will always be like that.

In its native land the fig tree grows wild. Birds spread the seeds all over the area and many seedlings can bear fruit. Therefore new varieties are always being discovered. Many seedling can be named after the town it's from, or a descriptive name. Just how two human can look very similar, but our DNA is different, you will find the same thing with Figs.

I am very interested in the Morucha fig.

I don't suppose anyone has one domestically?

Does anyone have any history on this fig?  I don't know the word "Morucha", I just know there is a cattle breed "Morucha", but the fig is round, and I don't understand why it would be named after a bull :)

Phew! I thought keeping track of heirloom tomato varities was dizzying.

This is a really good thread though. It's kinda nice to know that there are so many great varieties out there waiting to enlighten us newbies (i.e. me).

I believe Morucha is named after the moors from Morocco who occupied spain for centuries. However I can be wrong.
It's a very vigorous grower. I have one.
Here's how it looks. That's a photo from spain

@Bass, thanks, yes, that looks like the picture at the Galgoni.com website.

Do you have any remarks or wisdom you can share about this fig?

What beautiful skin that fig has, Bass!

Welcome to the forum, alanmercieca!  Thanks for the input.  Beautiful food at that blog.  You know, there is a thread in admiration of prickly pears in the first page of threads right now ;)

Does anyone know where one would be able to obtain some of these varieties?

Good fig friends in Spain?  ;)

De La Caseta is the #10 fig from Bass' post #23.  A fella from facebook Rafeds group gave a few out and I got it.  Can't find any reference other than in this topic.  Does anyone know any more about it?
