Fig Varieties In Ground in the Carolinas

Good day, here is a list of my fig trees that I have in my orchard. Some of these guys are large and some are very small and some are duplicate in my orchard like Hardy Chicago, Celeste, O'Rourke and Improved Celeste and Strawberry.  The figs from those trees are absolutely amazing!!!!  The small one will be dug up this Fall and replaced with another tree that I like more, like Improved Celeste or Italian Black, etc. I have about 200 or 250 in 30g pots that will be converted to self watering pots this winter. I've got about 50 in SWPs now and a firm believer that this method is the best for me.  After years of research on figs these below grow very well in the Carolinas. Some did not grow well for years until after a sever hard pruning like Martin's Unknown and Latturalla. After a hard pruning, I now have 10 time more figs than last year and the growth has tripled!

Also, my irrigation system is a blessing. With the constant 90+ degree weather and the extra watering have made my figs really grow over night. I will not be taking any cuttings from my trees this year.  I already have air layers set for those promised this fall. Those trees that do not produce figs this year will be culled this Fall and replaced.  I think I said that once.  I am working on a web site to display all my trees in ground and those in pots some time this year. Eight years ago, I went to at least 6 nurseries in my area asking about fig trees. Every one told me the only figs that grow in the Carolinas are Brown Turkey and Celeste. That was also the only figs they had in stock and knew of.  Well, I think I've proven them all wrong!

I got some others that I want to add to my orchard but when you have as many trees as I, you have to spend you time accordingly.  So, at the present time and I reschuffling my container trees and my irrigation system for them.  I have about 4 trees that I know I will be replacing.  Now, I need to decide which tree goes in the orchard this Fall!

Nice selection, Dennis! Continued good luck to you!!

Most excellent dedication! Well done.

Congratulations!  Hope you eat lots of great figs!

would love to see that web site when finish. i also recall some great videos you had spoken about from your previous visit with jon at ucd
good luck

Hello Dennis, Thanks for the info, even tho I'm north of you, I'll try to plant some of these types in ground to see if they will work here also. Will be waiting for the video. When you pruned the trees, did you come up with a reason why they did much better. Hope that wording is right, if not hope you understand my question.
