Fig Wasps 2017 video

I created another fig wasps video. Hope you guys enjoy it.

Interesting,I never realized those things were so small.

I told my wife the story about the figs having a dead wasp in them and she said I'm done with figs. She didn't want to hear how much better they are suppose to taste. So I had to convince her they were not in SC.

And that's why, ladies and gentlemen, I don't bite into a whole fig.  :P

Very cool videos!

Brilliant! Perfect musical accompaniment!

OK - Being a guy growing common figs in an area where this wasp will never be (probably in my lifetime) I need to ask...

So, you take a common fig tree and grow it in a region where fig wasps roam...will the wasps still enter and/or die in the common figs even if they're not pollinating them? or do the wasps somehow know only to apply their efforts to smyrna figs?

Very nice fig wasp videos.

Kelo,

Is this your personal video or just randomly found it on youtube?

The video I shared is my personal video which I filmed directly in our orchard. Everything was made made from the beginning till the end by us. It took us quite a bit of work to create the short film. I didn't just copy and paste it from another source. The wasps you see in the video are now present in our caprifigs. They will help pollinate the common figs.

The video you uploaded seems to be of a parasitic fig wasps. You can tell by the way they move, color and long needle like injector. It sniffs out hosts larvae with its rear and lays its eggs inside the fig. Possibly apocrypta which are fig species specific. Most likely the broom cluster fig. I doubt any of us will ever see those wasps in our figs.

Thanks, Jennifer

I would also be afraid to bite into a fig after seeing that video. It's really not that bad with the common figs we grow for consumption.
