First time seeing sunlight in their short lives, these fig wasps are leaving a recently discovered Caprifig of the Mamme (winter) crop.
They started as a tiny egg inside the galls of this same fruit back in the last fall, spent the whole winter going through their natural metamorphosis stages and are now leaving their sanctuary carrying a new load of eggs to start a new cycle inside figs of the following crop (Profichi) .

Thanks Francisco!
And they make figs taste so good..

Too bad in the north we can't do their pollination work by hand like you can for tomatoes.

You explain it so well Francisco!  Picking up my Zidi and Capri from Sue tomorrow!  We are both attending a Vintners seminar and tasting in her town.  It's a two day deal.  I have her phone number so hoping to see her at one of the seminars.  She's leaving the figs on her porch for me in case we miss each other.  I had a hard time finding the dried Calimyrna figs at the store, but finally did.  I'll try your seedling suggestion.

Love the photo!  Thanks for posting!

Suzi

thank you Francisco.
great pictures and info as always.

Thank you all for commenting and looking at those pictures.

@pino,

Yes, your zone will be too cold for the process.

@ Suzi,

Good! glad to see you are going to meet with Sue to collect the 'pair'  and exchange views on the subject. Sorry, I had suggested the Calimyrna to be sure their seeds were fertile and grown 'in house'.
Enjoy the seminars and the tasting!

Wow, Francisco beautiful pictures. I have not seen so many wasps at one time on a fig. Fig wasps heaven!!

I went back to the caprifig I found with momme and they were almost all gone. I found 4 and hopefully they have a few wasps in them. I'll be watching them.

How cute those little fellas! :-)

Thank you Francisco for letting us take part and that extra informations!

Hello Pat,
Thank you. Been absent for the last 2 or 3 days and saw them this morning. they may have started to come out yesterday or the day before.
Will see tomorrow yearly morning... these Mamme figs are very large so there must be hundreds of them.

If the Caprifig you discovered is somehow exposed to people, for curiosity they may have picked up some figs to taste ?!- it's not common to seed those fruit looking ripen... in March ! or
having rapidly decayed once the wasps left, they would naturally fall to the ground.

Just checked the coming weather here...which may bring some unhappy surprises.
Tuesday and Wednesday temperatures may go up 92F.. which is not good for the wild fig and wasp.
(this is something that would never happen in your whereabouts)
Your area is ideal for the Caprifig and wasp

Thanks again for the photos. I always enjoy seeing them.

That fig is visually mesmerizing.

Hello Christian,
Thanks for taking your time  looking at those wasps   (slightly more than 1 mm) with such short lives and giving us so much!

Gina,
Thank you. Sincerely hope that this season you shall be given the opportunity of playing with these tiny creatures in real and to 'make' great figs !.. enabling you to prepare this recipe with the exact ingredients...
