Fig Weather is Here

I moved my first potted figs outside this morning. They have been in storage since November. The 10-day forecast shows that lows will stay about 40F or better. I uncovered my 2 in-ground trees last week and my house is over run with figs. I took inventory of my plants today and somehow I find myself with 53 plants and another 5 cuttings still in a bag rooting. I guess the fig craze overtook me when I wasn't looking - LOL.

I'll wait another week to start moving my big potted figs outside since they are growing really nice right now and the temps will warm-up more by next week. The smaller ones will wait a few weeks yet.

I will be offering-up some of my "duplicates" over the next several weeks, so stay tuned and let me know if you are interested via email.

I attached pictures (potted ones only) that I labeled with varieties - just for fun while I wait for the sun to warm things up a little more and I get outside to do some spring clean-up.

Steve, I'd say the fig craze definitely overtook you!  53, that is definitely over the threshold value for fig craze fever.  Those are some really nice looking plants.  The Martin brothers have really grown; I hardly recognized them.
Here, I am still waiting for just a bit warmer weather before I move any figs outdoors, but it won't be long now at all.  We are beginning mowing season, and a lot of stuff is ready to go into the garden.  I'd guess the figs can stay outside when the tomatoes can go into the garden.

Steve,
nice pictures!
53 plants well to me thats a lot of plants but the experiments you did got you those plants and helped a lot of folks of forum so hats off to you and hope your plants continue to thrive.
I have feeling though you will thin some out by sending them off to hopefully good homes and this time next season that 53 number will be a little bit larger as i can think of some more experiments for you to do... ha!!!   ; )

Mark,
yes the grass guy came out the other day and started the first of 4 trips to fertilize , i cut out front once already and grass now in yard is starting to grow fast. Cant get the big tiller in garden as everytime its almost dry the rains come darn.
But at least for us folks now in colder zones we are beginning to shuffle around ourplants in and out notice the folks in the warm states now are kinda quiet, i figure thats because there watching them grow like crazy already sure must be nice!!!
I enjoy the post when they say " i dont think went into dormancy or it was dormant for a week or 2 this year," yeah yeah ..lol
what we do for our plants eh?
By know meens am i knocking them in warmer climates, just wish in winter they would not hog all the warm weather!!!
All in fun, as i said short time ago WINTER can kiss my plants Breabas now!
    ; )
Best Health

Beautiful Steve,  They are gorgeous.  I hope and wish the best of luck for you and all of them.  How nice, and thanks for such descriptive pictures.  Ciao

Thanks all. My wife jokes with me that I don't show pictures of the kids anymore - just the figs! LOL

Martin - Yup, all that experimentation yields alot of plants - I already found homes for most of them from the "big" experiment this winter. The many other varieties I have I owe to the generosity of several forum members to whom I am very grateful.

It's a nice sunny 70 degrees today and I spent most of it outside planting shrubs and cleaning out the planting beds since I was off work today. Of course, I stop and stare and my figs expecting them to pop out a fruit or two when I'm not looking. :o)

Mark - The Martin Brothers are taking over the house, aren't they!

Steve!
They are all so healthy looking :) You have a wonderful collection! The pictures are great, we all love when someone post pictures ;)  I bet you cant wait until the day you get figs on every type!!!!! That will be something to look foward to and should not be long.. Thanks for sharing.

94F at 12:30 San Diego today.

94 in San Diego ?
Little on the warm side there Jon.

94, that's intolerable! Well, I can't complain, its been 70's the past 2 days and even though today was in the 60's it was nice and sunny. I'm glad for it and the potted figs I brought out on Friday, are starting to break buds.

On the bright side, it came with low humidity. The high last Wednesday was 58F - so almost a 40 degree swing in 4 days. Makes growing young plants interesting. Also, if some past years are a guide, today could actually be our warmest day of the year - strange as that may seem.

Steve, I have some brebas which are full size already, and I noticed a couple of plants on Saturday that are forming main crop figs already. Some East coast guys are trying to decide if it is safe to bring their figs out of storage and I have trees with 18" of growth on them already. Just a different scenario: on which I am happy to "suffer" through.

Jon,
I won't admit that I'm jealous of the weather (OK, I am). I'm so happy to see little breba buds on at least 3 of my varieties over the weekend. Also tip buds have started to open. I am fortunate to have a very large deck that faces SW and gets bright sun all day. It's great for the potted figs. The problem is that even that is not enough room for all the plants that I ended up with over the winter. So I'm preparing some other locations on my property for them. Keeps me busy and out of trouble.

Well its 42 out with rain. high 50 today, tomorrow much the same little cooler though with the hightemp reaching 45 or so. Fig trees have been outside in cool weather getting a nice bath.
Then things change for the better later in week 60s , 70s

We may be over 100 today, and then down to 70 by Friday. Can you say "rollercoaster"?

And I read they had 10" of snow in Colorado this weekend?

Yes ROLLERCOASTER!!!

Mostly Sunny

Plenty of sun. Highs in the low 70s and lows in the low 50s.

Once we are clear of this day or two of cold wet weather, we should be free and clear (as far as low temps go). I'll be moving the rest of the bigger plants outside this weekend. Put a few out yesterday to "test the waters" so to speak.

My large ones have been out last few days and nights but i might have to bring in tomorrow night as they say 35 for low , at this point better safe than sorry for me, now i hear maybe 80 friday!!!

101F today, and almost no humidity, so crispied a lot of tender leaves. Everything will live, but plants cannot absorb enough water to support the tender new growth.

Steve, do you do anything special to control the indoor humidity?  I still have my recently potted plants in buckets covered with plastic.  I'm concerned it is currently too dry in the house.

Shenval,

No I really do not. I have forced hot air heating which tends to dry things out pretty bad when it is cold out and the heat is running. I use the "nursery" for cuttings that just rooted and are in cups. After I pot them in 1 gallons, I use a bag over them (with some air holes) for the first few days. The ones under the grow light actually see the driest conditions (in the basement where the furnace is). During real cold spells this winter, the RH has been below 20. Once they are growing a bit in the pots, they can take the dryness. Just use the bags for a while and observe to see any wilting or withering. I try to do this over the weekends when I am home so I can watch them.

High 70's end of week, and 80's this weekend.   Fig weather is here very much so.   happy planting.  Ciao

Looking forward to the 70s and 80s this weekend. The rain is clearing out tonight. These are pics of the Aldo fig I moved outside just before the rains started. It still looks great and will be joined by many more that I am moving outside this weekend.

Similar weather here as well Steve toward thweekend.
Larger trees spending the night outdoors it might get to 36 , 37 or so but it wont hold that temp long and will climb quickly . All the grow light plants are getting kicked out tomorrow. Steve my unknown last to lose leaves in fall, last to ripen figs in fall is first to show ity bity leaves now before the rest go figure. Hope the nightly temps sart to be more stable from here on in so trees do not have to be moved anymore and i can perhaps bring out back to the patio soon instead of driveway.

I already took most of my potted trees outside, about a 100 trees. Tomorrow morning will be around 32, but over the weekend it will reach 88 degrees.
That's a rollercoaster.

WE're back to low 60s and barely seeing the sun for 2-3 days. Rollercoaster.

Jon,

What a roller coaster with your weather. We are in a level period of 80's and 60 at night. Great fig weather. I hope my figs do as good as our NC Tarheels did in basket ball.

Jack
