Black Madeira and Long Yellow figlets in 1 gallon pots. These are 5-6 months or so old since they were cuttings. It's going to hurt to knock em off but I'll have to just suck it up.

Question: Does anyone see a correlation between cuttings that pop out figlets early and how soon a decent main crop comes in or how the cutting grows?

I have other varieties of cuttings all in the same soil mixture and watering/feeding regime so that leads me to believe it is just the genetics programming of these varieties or how much reserves they had stored when they were just cuttings rather than environmental variables.

Not certain, but I think your comments are correct. The type of cutting might have some bearing as well as how ready it was to fruit before being cut from the mother tree.

is your Black Madeira from UCD? mine is from UCD and they are puttng on the fig also. i started to root them back in march 25th. so it's been.. 4 months. they start showing tiny fig back about a month ago. i knocked 'em off already. i guess UCD BM are rather doing well this year.

I think it was Tapla that once said it depends were the scion was cut on the tree.
One part is older and will show fruit earlier while the other part is more juvenile and take a little extra time to show fruit.

i think i remember reading something about where the cutting is taken can determine if it will put out figs soon also in other forum.

So I'll experiment this fall and will try and root three separate batches of cuttings. Old wood before new growth, new growth, and most fruitful tips and see what we get.

Pete, my BM are from KK, I'll inquire as to the source. The parent tree, figs looked wonderful and healthy.
