Figlets on young plant

This is my Della Signora plant which I have only had for about a month or so. It has grown like crazy. When it arrived it was in a 9cm pot and had no sign of any figs. I put it into a bigger pot and it almost immediately reacted by popping out a couple of little figs, the largest is about the size of my thumb. Should I be leaving them on or removing them? I am in the north east of Scotland and the plant is in a polytunnel.

The plant looks small at this time so it is a difficult decision.
Leave the figlets on and the plant will slow down or stop its growth and focus on ripening one or 2 figs and likely will not ripen them fully.
Drop the figlets now and the plant will resume its growth and next year could reward you.
Its your choice.
good luck.

That is what I was thinking. What torture!

I see you have cleared Jurassic plants out!,haven't bought figs from them but prices seem very attractive and they have some less easily available varieties by the looks of it, how were they when they arrived?any good?

Haha! Yes, I couldn't resist trying out a few varieties at that price. I bought the plant in the photo above, along with one called Nero del Portogallo, about a month ago. They arrived in 9cm pots but have both grown on rapidly, really good roots on them. They were packed very well and arrived without any damage at all. I thought that they were good value.

My new batch should arrive on Tuesday.

I recommend removing them. Keeping them will certainly slow growth/development, and more than likely they will not be that good anyway. Many fig trees don't produce really good tasting figs until the 3rd year. I've heard that some keep improving until the 6th or 7th year.

Either way, this is one of those cases where patience is clearly a virtue ;-)

I read that toward the end of the season, any figs larger than a pea, like these two, should be removed but anything smaller left for the following year. How do you know when to do this, do I wait until leaf fall?

When does the inside of your hoop house start falling below 40 F = 4.5 C?  When do the highs start falling below 78 F = 25 C or so?

Thank you rcantor. The polytunnel is only 3 months old, so I will find out later this year. :)
