Figo Preto

@Tyro- beautiful Preto fig tree and lovely photos of the fruits.
The rest of you guys that are growing Pretos, nice work and keep the photos and updates coming.

@Sas
Sorry to see you lost so much wood on your tree,did it die back to ground level?
Quite the difference from zone 8b to 9a,the worst I saw was 26 f for 6-7 hours
one night.I had a couple of Preto's that size outside but they saw no damage.
My projected low was supposed to be 38 f,I've given up with giving credence
to projected lows from weather services because the topography in my town varies
so much.That particular night lows ranged from 40f-26f,all within 3 miles from my house.
Clearly I'm in a cold sink.If you can find a micro climate (south or west facing wall tight
to a heated structure)it should help.I still have last years basil in one micro.Do you know
what your low temps were that brought that damage Sas?

@Mahdi
Thanks for the kind words,hope everyone's growing season is off to a good start.

Hi Paul,

What is interesting is that the Preto was shorter the previous season and the winter was colder than this past one but no wood was lost the previous year.
This year the whole plant above the soil dried up and all the new growth is from beneath the soil. I just lost a five year old in ground tree (different variety) for no apparent reason at all.
It initially sprouted then went into shock.
I've seen temperatures as low as 18F at night before but the damage was not as severe as this year.
There's a chance that since the winter was fairly dry over here that I may have contributed to killing some trees as I did not water as often as I should've perhaps and was away most of March.
Most of my trees are coming back including the inground ones but there was significant damage to some.
Here are some examples:
(All these trees were left unprotected)

See photos:
Five year old Jaune de Gascogne totally dead.

Black Madeira UCD new growth from beneath ground.

Col de Dame Noir growth from beneath ground.

Cold de Dame Blanc (UCD)

It feels as if someone keeps hitting the rest button on my trees lol.

So this is how the Preto looks today after removing the dead wood :

So I guess in Austin's zone 8b Preto still needs winter cover to avoid losing structure.
I noted your previous pic's showed the plant on a raised balcony?

DonCentralTexas also reported losing half his unprotected Preto structure this year at 17f.

My Figo Preto appears to be toast here @ Canyon Lake.

I didn't protect any of my trees this past winter and only the Prito and one Smith did not come out. The Smith was in a five gal bucket.

I have other five gal bucket figs that have sprouted nicely.

Ouch!Are you sure it's dead?That little guy had a nice wingspan.

I'm having some issues with yellowing leaves on mine.
