Figo Preto "countdown"

I got my 1st Figo Preto to swell up and change color.  I got the tree started as a cutting in July 2015, it took two months to root and leaf out.  I have 42 figs on the tree right now, its 5ft tall, in a 20 gal pot.

Its growing on a rock platform I made (not sure why? Looks cool?) :)

Here are a few pics.  Its been four days since it started changing color, 1st two pics were taken two days ago, last one is from today.  Looks like a pretty big fig to me, I will guess 80+ grams. :)  Just a few more days I hope.

Awesome, I keep hearing how slow they grow but your success is encouraging! I just got my 3 leaf preto a few weeks ago so it is great to hear the growth rate can be great under some conditions/environments! What is the soil mix you used made up of? How often do you water and if not on a regular schedule are you looking for the plant to stress to indicate the need for watering? Curious minds want to know!

The soilmix I use is Promix bx, Coco coir and perlite #4, 1/1/1 mix. I water about 1 gallon per day into a tray at the bottom of the pot, I water again once it's empty, usually every day, unless it's overcast. I reduced the water since it started to ripen, down to 1 cup a day.

He lives in Hawaii! !! I would grow fast threre too. Lol. I got a preto growing but no figs yet. Had one late in the season but took them off last year so it could grow faster. Was too late for them to ripen. Post pics before you eat it.

LOL, yup I guess growing in hawaii is a lot easier, but since I am in Southern California I am hoping my conditions will allow for even a fraction of that growth rate... truth is I have been watching mine EVERY day to make sure it does not die :)

Beautiful!! My mouth is watering.

Thanks! I have never used the coco coir but will try it out after seeing your results... I will also try out bottom watering. Well done!

Very nice fig!

Looks good Sid.A couple of questions.
Did the tree go dormant over the winter?
Did it carry over that fig from last year?
That's second year wood,no?

Thanks. @tyro: I have not had it for a year yet, 8 months since I received the cutting. The ones from you are growing much faster, since I keep knocking off the figs. They produce figs at every node.

All my fig trees go dormant from November thru March. Unless I keep them in the greenhouse, which traps the heat in, but they still grow much slower during the winter than summer. All the Pretos were in the greenhouse over winter.

I expect the cuttings you sent to be 8-10 ft tall trees by the end of summer. I will let them fruit the following spring.

Also what do Preto usually weigh when ripe? I was not expecting them to be so large...

That is a monster.I don't believe I ever weighed one. Here's a photo of my main crop
size.

In your climate,who knows.Any chance that's a breba?

Thanks for the picture. The fig that is ripening now formed on 12/15/15, so over 110 days to ripen. I don't believe it is a breba. I will post a picture of it on a scale before I eat it. :)

That Preto is in paradise..literally!
Mine are in SIPs and they grow very well.  I use Pro-Mix BX, some azomite, and Osmocote slow release fertilizer.  They are the perfect size, in my opinion.  Not small, but large enough for 2 big bites.  :)
Congrats, and can't wait for your results.

correct me if I'm wrong, but that does look like a breba to me, I see a callused node without a leaf. did the leaf fall off after the fig formed?

From what little I know about breba figs, is they form on 2nd year wood. The tree has only been growing for 6 months, since it took two months to root. Just a little over two months after it rooted in September it formed that fig in December. There was a leaf next to the fig, but it fell off about a month ago. The wood is still green at the soil line, all 42 figs should be main crop figs.

nope not a breba, def main crop. that is impressive trunk thickness for a first year tree

I read there are 3 signs that signal a fig is ripe.

1. Hangman's neck (droops at the stem) check!
2. Penitent's robe (skin tears and cracks) check!
3. Mourner's eye (Honey oozing from the eye) check!

Should I pick it.... Or maybe put a glass jar under the fig and see if I can fill it with fig honey? ;)

Wow on the tree and double wow on that huge Fig! Wish I could help you decide if it's really ready! Enjoy it! Total Fig envy in AZ (going to be 36' on Friday nite again!) it's a while before we're eating Figs! Cheers!

I find my Pretos to taste best if I pick them as soon as they drip honey. Waiting too long after gives them less flavor in my opinion.

Ok picked it..  Could not find the scale, but I took a few pics.  This fig ripened over winter in a greenhouse, I expect it to be even better in the summer.

Taste was great... But I got excited and licked the syrup out of the middle of the fig, before I took the picture of the inside..  The syrup pool in the middle of the fig is so sweet, I thought it tasted like blueberry pancake syrup.  The fruit itself has a very sweet berry taste, the skin was chewy and sweet like fruit roll ups.  Best fig I have ever had. It lives up to all the rave reviews.  I would highly recommend it to anyone who can grow it in their zone.

Picture background is Peridot/Olivine green sand, I thought it would be a unique to Hawaii background.
