Figo Preto Temporão

The first Common -main crop- to ripen around here.

It is a good fig, not excessively  sweet, good flavor and  berry aromas.
Average or somehow above average size.

Here some pictures

Thank you for sharing these nice photos, Francisco. I always enjoy seeing the figs of Portugal.

I've got serious fig and climate envy Francisco !!

Nice pics lampo.

I have lots of family in the Acores... Ilha Graciosa  in particular. I really need to find a way to bring back some cuttings from my uncles tree. I can't really remember what it looks like, but it's possible that it's unknown to the western world.

Thanks for sharing.

nice :)

Wow! I do not even know what to say ...
Black, round and BIG , several ripe at the same time. Is the tree in the ground? Somehow mine (whatever variety) are getting ripe one at a time and I can eat one fig only.
How big is your tree and what is your secret?

Beautiful photos, look very appetizing!

Thank you all for your kind words and comments.

Psilva8 , I am not aware of all varieties in the Azores Archipelago but there are some famous figs originated from there.. I keep hearing in the forum of Capelas, Santa Cruz ....You have in Canada 'Adriano', a good source for varieties from the Islands . Are you too far from him ??

Igor,
These figs are from ground.
The small farm was sold beginning of this year. I am now sharing with brother an old fig farm where some new varieties have been planted recently.
Also focusing on my potted trees  to see how best make them root and grow. Once grown up they will move to ground. Am learning every day.

No secrets!

Francisco

Wow! Those are some mouth watering photos you got there. Thanks for sharing!

Francisco,
I always enjoy your photographs.
They entice me to travel to Portugal and to breed a fig wasp for Florida.

Francisco, this are premium black figs.. awe , I bet they would grow great here in LA too ;)

Nice looking figs Francisco. All your pictures are mouth watering. I am just dreaming of the future :-)

Torture. Absolute torture lo look at and can't taste! But nice

Now that's a good looking fig !

This has a beautiful bluish hue to it and nice cracks, a nice treat before the heavy weights arrive.

I second that! Great pictures as usual, Francisco.

lampo,

Adriano is about 3hrs drive from me but in the many times I've tried to contact him, I haven't had much luck. I managed to get in touch with a fellow named Nelson from Toronto (he's a member here but doesn't post much anymore), and he said he will sell some cuttings come fall if he has any.

Hi there Francisco,
Is it possible for you to post a pic of the leaf pattern. My buddy has a fig tree from Portugal and want to compare the leaf pattern.
Thanks
Dave .

Adriano is sometimes difficult to get a hold of and sometimes doesn't have much to offer, you may be better off calling him and seeing if he would give you a tour of his garden and maybe he might be able to start an airlayer for you and sell it to you later on?

Thank you fellows for watching and commenting.

For those searching for a similar climate, I may say that it's there  in your Central Valley, from Redding to Bakersfield, with slight variations,  that is premium Fig Land. Lots of sun , long, hot and dry summers.. soils may vary but that's not difficult to correct if required. Ours is mostly calcareous and figs love it.
As for the good varieties, they are ALL in America ! far more than what we have here..
And the wasps ?? .. you have recently witnessed through the forum,  fellows living with them at their doorstep for years.. without noticing them.  So,  all ingredients readily available.

I was very happy today when I read Igor's post today and saw the pictures showing his main crop DK  ripen and its sparkling colors! another super fig coming to life!

psilva8,
Right..Nelson shall certainly be a good source of information..send him a PM

Dave,
Will post soon the leaves you wish..

Francisco

Thanks as always, Francisco.

Thanks , Francisco
