FIGO SOFÊNO ESCURO

Sofêno escuro produces brebas (not much this season) and a prolific main crop.
It is classified under the Cachopeiro family which means that the Summer figs are parthenocarpic, no wasp then.

Large, dark brown, tasty with a particular flavor with a mix of acidic sweetness.

Like Quarteira,  once you eat  the first fig, it will be difficult to stop !

(also called 'sôpa e vinho' )

Francisco, are there more than 1 type of Sofeno ? Looks like you are having a good
harvest for the season. I am having one of the best breba harvest and main crop seems
to be heading that way too.

Thanks for posting the pic's.

Francisco,
I seriously want to come live at your house! Enjoy the fruits of your labor my friend and thank you for sharing.

Paul, Tami

Thank you for looking at my notes and pictures of this SOFÊNO -
Also your kind considerations

Paul,

There are 3 Sofêno cultivars -

- ESCURO , the one shown today  (escuro means dark)

- BRANCO , to be shown later this month -..have never shown in the f4f

- BLACK , to be shown later, around mid-month  (did show a picture last season and again here now)

I must say that this year, for some cultivars, the season was quite exceptional.

BUT BUT ... also exceptional has been the attack of birds arriving in big flocks and eating all the best fruit

Tami,

You are always welcome. Like all of you we do love figs. They have been part of our life for many centuries.

Thanks for the pictures.

please don't stop posting pics.

Man, the 4th photograph makes my mouth water!

Thanks for sharing your photos!!!

Hi Francisco, these figs look great what's the main differences or similarities between the sofêno escuro and sofêno preto in terms of flavor and productivity?

I have been taking good care of my small sofêno preto and hope to get some figs next season.

I love your fig photos!  Thanks for sharing them.

When i see those cracks on the fruit i love it.. the skin looks crisp and the fruit full of juices..

are the cracks on the skin a sign of over watering ? or is it only that some varieites just seem to show it? probably they are less prone to splitting cause the skin can stretch?
are the varieites showing it are better tasting? my experience is that they are more flavour-full.

Thank you for your appreciation and commenting on my presentation of Sofêno Escuro.
I promise to keep sending pictures of some Portuguese figs.

Rui, you are welcome  to see and  taste these figs. Next time you come around, let me know.

Nelson, thanks. I believe that one particular characteristic is common to all Sofêno figs
-Escuro, Branco e Preto- a light mix of fruity flavors and a pronounced acidic sweetness. Sofêno Preto is for me the Champion of the three,  one of the very best!
I go mad with its RUBI,  full, dense pulp!
Let's pray for your Sofêno Preto to grow healthy
The most productive is Sofêno Escuro, about the same for Sofêno Branco. The Sof.Preto with the correct cultivation pactises is also a good producer but not like the other two.

Eli, Thanks for asking. The skin cracks, common in many figs is a sign of ripeness to my understanding.
I believe it has to do with the genetics of the fruit giving figs more or less flexible/strong /elastic skin.
I am sure nutrient's proportions and minerals/water may influence their skin properties
Some cultivars when ripe, always show 'vertical' cracks - abebereira/bebera branca for instance
Inchário Preto in general terms when ripe shows no cracks at all but for some reasons, may show vertical cracking if overpollinated for instance .. QUARTEIRA, when well ripe shows horizontal (equatorial) cracks all around the fig.
