Figs 4 Fun in a Few...Weeks

  • Avatar / Picture

If all goes well (birds, squirrels, etc.), after two years of cuttings, mixing, air layering, watering, repotting, planting, girdling, this could be a first and most fun fig feast ever...I'll take a small bowl of three or four different varieties with visions of dieseler-esque or snaglpus-ian plates, and FMD-ed bounties dancing in my head.

Edit: If you mouse-over the photos, the filenames with the figs named in it, will pop up. I am in this state because of the sharing that has happened on this forum. Meanwhile, from left to right:

1 black bethlehem (bass)
2 the orchard (jd)
3 unknown kilmartin drive celeste (local)
4 lsu improved celeste (just fruits)
5 lsu purple (john)
6 ronde de bordeaux (bass)

Hope you get your bounty Jimmie you worked hard for it

Enjoy the fruit of your labour.
I just had 4 nicely ripe big brebas of "Grantham Royale" for breaking fast of Ramadan. Of course I shared it with one of my grandsons since the other one likes only hamburger and French Fries.

(Edit: The plant is small and was rooted in Fevruary 2010 amd had 6 brebas this year. I will have to pamper this plant).

Jimmie, what a cornucopia of figs you've grown! You've got to name them for us, please.

Which one are you most looking forward to tasting?

JD ,
glad your willing to share your fig pictures i really enjoy seeing others ripe figs and plants.
Hopefully you have the nice weather when the time comes.
Oh
please show a few dark types also.  ; )
Thanks

Hi JD.  This is only the beginning my friend.

Every year will be better: More figs and better figs as your plants mature.

Best wishes for continued success.

Enjoy!

John

Very nice, JD! It's so much fun when it starts paying off!

Good for you JD.  I still have some work to do to get there, but it gives me hope.

Did I see mango tree peeking out from the figs???

I hope yo get to enjoy the fruits of your labor soon!!!
Anya

Looking good Jimmie you will have those figs ripening in no time. You wouldn't happen to be growing some Atemoya would you?

JD, nice collection you have there. Maybe you can plant few of them in ground next season or so, since your climate is ideal for growing figs in ground.

Enjoyed looking at the pictures, thanks for posting them.

Thanks all. I wish I were better prepared with a bird strategy. I lost two LSU ICs this evening. Oh man! And they had just drooped and started to color. I have rebar, 1/2" EMT, and netting so I have to do something.

Anya,
You do see mango peaking through. Three in pots for root stock/grafting. The plan is to grow a 5ft well branched tree in a large pot so it will get topped again come winter. Then grafting my two favorite cultivars from South Florida. I am trying to arrange an overwinter in the greenhouse of some local friends who happen to be farmers.

Nelson,
Not in this picture but I had a Geffner from Top Tropicals that did not survive my oversight during the 1st cold spell and frost of 2010.

Navid,
I have seven trees in ground including Black Madeira (Jon),  Hardy Chicago (Martin), Kilmartin Celeste (local), LSU Gold (Sal), MVSB (Herman), Strawberry Verte (Jon), and Unknown Stallion (NM find). I also started a five fig tree hedge along the north property line with the figs from Point Loma/San Diego/Sue/Jon. Those are Abebereira, Branca, Preto, Chico Strawberry, and Strawberry Verte. I started them cuttings direct to ground in the Spring. Right now, the plants alive, covered with shade cloth, small, and growing. When Fall arrives, I plan to put a subset - if not all - of the following trees into the ground: Atreano, Conadria, Gino's Black, GM#1, LSU Purple, LSU Scott's Black, Native Black, Paradiso, Sal's EL, Smith, Socorro Black, TXBA-1, and Voiture #217. They will be closely spaced, i.e., no more than 5ft and pruned heavily.

Interesting that your Kilmartin Celeste has figs. My in-ground Celeste had one flush and was done in June. I wonder if it has to do with yours being in a pot or just a variation in cultivars. I guess mine had a really late flush of 2-4 figs last year in October or November, but they got frost bite in December.

Are you putting those trees in ground just for storage or do you plan to grow them that close? Seems really close!

5ft spacing is perfect for the space, # of trees as well as irrigation and growth habits that I practice and want to practice. My family will be involved so access to fruit (for a seven year old), tree size (no ladders for my DW), pruning (heavily), and watering received strong consideration.

JD, I like your plan. How old are the ones (the 7 varieties) that are already in ground? Back in April-March I planted three of my trees in ground, if everything go as planed (don't die in winter), I plan to put few more in ground next spring. Otherwise, rest will be kept in their perspective containers as usual.

Navid,
All of the in ground trees were started from cuttings about 24 months ago. The HC and Stallion were planted first after about 12 months in a pot followed by Kilmartin then MVSB and Black Madeira. The Abebereria, Branca, Preto, Chico Strawberry, and Strawbery Verte were the last to go into the ground.

Hi Jd, i just noticed that name Kilmartin.
Do you have any idea where that name came from.

Martin,
Kilmartin is the name of a street here in Tallahassee. I am not certain of its origins.

Edit: I presumed that you were *not* talking about etymology but that you wanted to know the who, what, or why I called it Kilmartin.

I have to look up that etymology word you used now.  ; )

Didn't mean to give you any homework. Etymology means just what you said "where a word comes from"...its history, origins, and meaning(s).
