Figs 4 Fun Website change

I made some changes to the "A" page layout, as the next step to adding new information. Hope this works well for everyone.

It is a little rough yet, but will get the missing and dead things corrected, hopefully tomorrow.

Enjoy.

Jon,
I like it! It's cleaner and easier to read. Well laid out.
Sue

Looks good to my old eyes :)

Cecil

Very good. Better for my eyes. Thanks Jon.

I like the fact that one can see at least one picture of the fig with its description.
As they say, a picture is worth a million words.
George (NJ).

Easy to read and good separation between each variety.
May I ask why you decided not to have any description text under the photos such as Adriatic and Alma with long descriptive text in narrow column form? You could have left one line space under the photo and then make use of the rest of the space. But that is only my opinion.

I like this new version.  It is orderly and easy on the eyes.

My only recommendation would be to put the fig leaf graphic in the empty squares where photos are not available.  The thin black line without a picture makes the entry look unfinished.  Another option would be a black square with "No Photo Available" in white lettering.

Other than that, it looks great!

OK, I made some more progress tonight. See changes to Adriatic, Aked, Alma, and Archipel. Shortened the main page description, and moved most to supplementary page. Cleaned up the citation layouts (Hi, Sue!). Added USDA / UC Davis Accession Data as PDF files. Note how many "Synonyms" are listed on the USDA Accession pages. Naming is more of a mess, than we thought.

Haven't decided how to handle varieties with no pix. I have the place-holder "square" for now. Don't really like "No Photo Available" graphics (personal choice), and not sure I want that many "place-holder" leaf pix, either. So, it is going to stay with the outline box, until I get and inspired solution. Maybe I'll experiment with a fig leaf outline, instead of the box.

When most of the "Description" material is on a supporting page, not using text-wrapping around the photo won't be much of an issue, and the long narrow description column issue will disappear as well.

Not sure how to handle the Synonyms, just yet. I may experiment putting them as a list underneath the photo, along side of the Description area. They are a "messy" part of the page, currently. My web-design teacher and I experimented with several solutions for an entire evening this week, but they are more cumbersome than the current method of treatment, or not workable at all.

"U" page updated.

"Uncle Corky's" Fig added. May prove to be a good variety for short season locations, and for people interested in breba crop production.

"B" is done, with new info pages, including links to PDFs of the USDA/UC Davis Accession data files.

Jon,

The new web pages are great!  I agree with others
that it is easy on the eyes.  And the shortened
descriptions and number of photos on the main page
make it much easier for me to download on dial-up.
Thanks.

Elizabeth

"C" is done, with new info pages, including links to PDFs of the USDA/UC Davis Accession data files.

New Lebanese 3- pix added.

"D", "E", and "F" finished, with USDA / UC Davis Accession Data. Added links between UCR 228-20 and Endererud. Updated Diredo, and Encanto information.

Updated "G', "H", and "I". Also added more varieties in A-F, fixed "Info page" links and uploaded more Info pages and more USDA accession data.

"J" thru "R" are finished, and half of "S", "T" thru "#" have been reformatted, but not all thumbs and links are done.

"S" thru "X" finished.

"S" thru "#" completed. Just a few USDA/UC Davis Accession data pages need to be added, yet.

Hi Jon, I will work with the french translations, Google translator is OK but some major errors, even UC Davis. My french is rusty, anyone to participate ?

(21)  always get   page not found
more photos , at EXCEL show a different fig ?
Will email other findings later

(21) is a dead link, and I have not been able to locate a new URL, even by Googling the information that the page contained. That is not bad: about 60% of my banana liniks have disappeared, so at We Be Bananas, a lot of lost information is still preserved. At Figs 4 Fun there are only a half dozen links that are dead and gone. I have started saving websites as PDFs, so I won't loose any more original sources.

My Excel does have more color, maybe. Not sure, yet, if it is environmental, or perhaps mislabeled. Either way, mine is a great tasting fig. If you look at the recent UC Davis pix by Ken and myself, they are yellow, and light, but their older pix from their site shows a much darker. almost reddish, interior - so identifiying figs is still an art, not a science.

Hi Jon,

I thought I had registered here before, but apparently not.  I have mostly lurked here as I haven't had anything I've thought I could contribute yet.

But first, let me get something off of my chest: I like your Figs4Fun site!! :)

Okay, now for some feedback and thoughts.  As part of a campaign I've had going for several ears, I'd like to address the font you've used.  Other than for some page titles, etc., I would not mind if I never saw Helvetica or Arial fonts again.  Some people like to pick a battle with Microsft over really big things like Explorer vs. Firefox.  Me, I just take on the role they've played in making Helvetica popular at first (via Excel, their spreadsheet software, not the fig) and then Arial.  I believe it is harder to read.  Take a look at the fonts used by newspapers, magazines, novels, etc.  You'll see that their web sites also use something like Times New Roman.  I've sometimes thought about trying to compare web sites creaed on PCs vs. those created on Macs to see if I'd find the diference like I expect exists.  Okay, enough of that, please just give it some thoguht.

Regarding your lost links, you might try looking them up at http://www.archive.org/index.php.  I've found this site to be a very helpful tool, though I don't know if you'd want to link to a cached copy for very long.

Thanks again,

Harvey

For some reason, later cached versions of reference 21 are not being accessed, but I did find this version working:

http://web.archive.org/web/20031214172932/http://members.ozemail.com.au/~hsca/Inv_fig.html

Maybe you can print it out or convert it to a pdf or use the information in it to find some contacts to see if they have it online somewhere else now.

I did find one search result that showed the e-mail for Heritage Seed Curators of Australia could be sent to Bill Hankin at seeds@chariot.net.au, but I suspect that might not work (didn't try it).

Nice finds, Harvey.

I copied the site both as HTML and as a PDF. I have been doing that with more and more sites lately, so no more info will get lost. I wasn't aware of the cache site, so will check it out. The dead links are material which I collected 5-6 years ago, maybe longer, for my own use, and long before there was any thought of turning it into a website.

I was able to recover most of 3 or 4 other dead links. Fabulous. You get a gold star today. I will have to try this for the banana links that are dead.

You're welcome, Jon!

I think I even used that cache site to recover an old version of one my own site's pages once!

Can I trade in the gold star for a Black Madeira??? LOL

I think I'll have to break down some day and buy Acrobat Writer.  I've seen a free pdf software out there but it imprints their name on documents.  I just haven't broke down to spend the money yet.

Harvey,

I have it because it was part of the Adobe Suite when I need Dreamweaver. If you have Photoshop, as a stand alone program, it will get you an update to the whole Adobe CS3 Suite, including Acrobat, for a little more than the cost of any one program. I went from Photoshop 7 to the whole suite.

I have PSCS2 now but haven't talked myself into an upgrade yet....

Jon, the links on Marabout C Smymay don't seem to work. :(
