Figs 4 Fun Website OVERHAUL

I have started experimenting with a new information format. It has not changed a lot, so far, and there are some things that are not the way I would like them to be, but needed to stop somewhere for a little while.

The goal is to have 27 pages (A-Z and #s) linked to the "alphabet bar" near the top, which will then load an index on the left hand side and an info page for the "letter" which is selected on the right. Then, you can use the index to go to a specific variety, or scroll through the info.

SO
It is time for your input. The old format will continue to be available until I get all the new changes done (such as B-Z). All of you have different computers, monitors, settings, etc, which I could never hope to duplicate, so any issue or problem you see is probably not seen by me. The new format will only be available through this link:

hello jon,

i have no technical experience whatsoever with websites but i can tell you a
little about my experience viewing your website on my laptop using dial-up
in our rural area.

the new descriptive screen with the filtered fig leaves on the background is
easy on my eyes even though the type is smaller than on the old page with
solid green background.  i like it!   but, would like it more with larger
print.   :-)

the wide 'figs 4 fun' banner across the top takes away space from the info
description and i have difficulty reading blue letters against a black
background.  it's attractive, but hard on my eyes.  the larger A to Z letters,
lighter in color, are easier to read though i still prefer the lighter background
of the fig leaves.

thanks for all your work on making fig information available to the world on
top of everything else you do.

I'm using Mozilla Firefox browser, with Cable modem high speed connection. I have no problem viewing the new site. It's a quick and easy way to view all the varieties.

Hi Jon,
Wow --- must be the fig garden U have boosting your energies.  Your fig garden could be very good therapy rehab for motivation. I would be on "overdrive" to produce the kind of work U are doing. Just my 2 cents that I find the dark background & blue words not as comfortable. The rest is great. Thanks again.

Paul

Yes, the blue words are a problem. They were light green, but things happen when they become links. That will definitely have to change. I am experimenting, for the moment. I wanted to get some feedback before I get too far into this. I want to find some other ways to present the pix, perhaps in linked galleries. l am also looking at some search functions, (which come with ads) because there is so much info that could go in so many different locations. The goal is to make it more useful.

Elizabeth!!!! I just realized, with the CSS style sheets that will be used on the new website, I can create a large print edition almost instantly.

You can can see the difference with these two files (the info part of the page) http://figs4fun.com/Varieties_A_info.html  and  http://figs4fun.com/Varieties_A_info-LP.html

SO much fun, and so little time.

The black background gives a 'Halloween" feeling. I know this site has used black background very frequently. If this is also open for reconsideration, I would suggest a soothing light greenish background as among the options to consider.
I do not have any other access related problems using high speed phone connected modem.

jon,

i like the large print version!  did notice that occasionally the large print showed up on the first version as well, it went back and forth through the entire thing.

more ice forecast for a large area, including here in missouri for overnight tonight.  need to find a battery operated hair dryer so i can unthaw the door handles to the hoophouse.  barely got in yesterday without one.  when ice is on the ground, it is a difficult thing to drag electric cords down there with a hair dryer in tow.  :-)

be safe if you are in the path of the ice.  woody - thinking about you in that crazy KC driving situation.  lots of accidents up there already.  hibernation would be convenient right now.  generator is ready to go to keep the heat on, just in case power goes out.  but computer use will not likely be happening.

Hi Jon,
I have to agree the banner is too big so it takes up space better used for fig information. I also have a hard time with the blue lettering on black. Since that is a default color for an unvisited link (alink?) you will have to override the default with a color of your choice. Your software may have an easy way for you to do this. I use Dreamweaver but also code in HTML. What software are you using and where are you taking your web class?
