Figs 4 Fun website update

I am beginning updates to the website.

Fixing a lot of little things, updating obsolete links, and the like.

Added (corrected links) to USDA/UC Davis data on the Caprifigs

Tonight I updated the "A" page Index and the "A" Info page, adding several new varieties, new Thumbnail pages, some new pix, and updating the Figs 4 Fun Collection Accession numbers (now that the collection has been inventoried and relabeled with new permanent brass tags).

This will probably take till the end of the year to complete.

Great info, but sometimes I get lost trying to navigate the site. If it isn't too difficult, what would you think of adding your standard links menu to the variety pages as well?

Thanks Jon.

Yes thanks Jon,

Thanks Jon, always look forward to the updates.

I have thought about adding a "Home" button to the varieties page.

go for it.

Some people might not know how to use the Internet and they might not know how to go back...

A home button would be great. All the info you've dollected on individual varieties is such a superb resource for someone like me, trying to sort out all the different options and compare characteristics. If I were just looking up one or two specific varieties a home button probably wouldn't matter, but I tend to atart in the "A"s and go through them in order. By the time I'm very far along, the only practical way back to the main site menu is to find it again on my "favorites" list.

But--regardless of whether you make any more navigation changes, it's a great site and a wealth of information! Thanks for putting it (and the forum) all together!

BTW, In the varieties section, the nature of the javascript used does not allow you to go "back" when you jump from one variety to another variety not beginning with the same letter, so to return to the original letter you must "click" the letter at the top of the page, rather than the "back" button. It was a trade off made when desigining the site.

"B" finished and "C" finished except for index.

Many of the new galleries only have an initial picture so that the links are complete, but more pix will follow in time.

D-H uploaded today.

I-S info pages uploaded last night, but not all of the thumbnails and galleries have been completed.

T-Z and #s uploaded. All #s added to the #s page and linked to their Official names, such as UCR 143-36.

Leaf photos of fico rosso,  barnisotte gris,  wild strawberry,  rei,  royal mediterranean,  saba,  fico nera di duemane,  kadoma,  italian purp beefera,  vasilika sika,  schar italian,  schar amber,  smith,  unknownSV,  naples white,  white triana,  beers black,  zumwalt,  BT-TE2,  sicilian black italian added.

Jon,
A couple questions, Do you currently have all the varieties you've listed there?
Also I'm sure we can all contribute and provide you with description based on our experiences with some of the varieties. specially with the varieties that don't have info?

Bass,

If there is an Accession No., then it is in the Figs 4 Fun Collection. That may mean it is a 20' tree, or a newly rooted cutting, or anything in between. Approx 175 in gorund, 150 in 15 gallon containers, the rest in 20ozcup-5g.

If others can contribute info, I am all over it. The point has always been to share from any and all sources, in an organized way, so that everyone can benefit.

I have a suggestion, why don't you start a sticky post and allow others to contribute  info on the varieties that doesn't have much of a description.

anacapa, bayenfeige violetta, beers black, dark green genoa, giant celeste, giant celeste, GM-11, GM9-, johannes, large negronne, neroBC, old home 1895, oregon honey, petit negri, reculver, saba1, sal's corleone, san javier, san pa--, sicilian fico rosso, susser, tarentella, tashkent, verde passo feaf pix and galleries added.

Thanks for the work, Jon.  By chance, I was looking at Sicilian Black less than 2 hours ago to see if there was an indication of what JR's variety is, whether it is Sal's, if the Sal's variety was ID'd in the SB, and saw the San Pa---, which caught my interest because I'd never seen it before.  I noticed that the hyperlink to the San Pa--- anchor is not working.

On the variety page, you incorrectly set the anchor name to  name="SAPPA---" but it should be  name="SANPA---"

Hope this helps.

Tuscon Ken,

"HOME" button added to all of the variety pages to get you back to the main page. A little thing that has annoyed some of us for a while. ;-))

OOPS - didn't work in the "frames" so will have to rethink.

That's better. Had to use "new window" but it works.

Jason,

Gee, I can't get away with anything. Actually it was "SAP PA: and should have been "SANPA": wrong spelling and extra space.

Bass,

Good idea, but not ready to handle the info, quite yet. Remind me about New Years Day.

I've found a few other things in the Variety pages that are a little wonky, most are simply typographical errors like that anchor name - common stuff to find when hand-entering this amount of data.  Do you want to know about them?  If yes, what's the best way to report them?

Yes, let me know. I find things when I look at the site, but it is hard to proofread when you are in the midst of it - you always need some distance and time before you start seeing things. E-mail is best.

I fixed a few more things tonight (not uploaded yet) which I have found over the last few months. Typos, missing thumbnails, files not uploaded, etc.

Also made several changes and additions to the numbered selections at USDA/UC Davis. As I read the pedigrees of some of the figs, it is becoming apparent which are caprifigs that I don't need to try, or which are not going to get "any better" next season.

A ton of little things: updated indexes, some new pix, some new galleries, added info, and neatened up a few things.

Jon -
A navigation toolbar (HOME FIGS4 WEBE VARIETY_NFO AVAILABLE_VARIETIES SCION4SALE) on each page just underneath the logo would be a nice addition.
JD

Each variety page has a Home button at the top of the index.
