Figs 4 Fun website update

"Each variety page has a Home button at the top of the index."

Yes (and thanks!).

My thought was to include the HOME button in a navigation bar that includes the other places that we tend to visit regularly like the VARIETY page and the AVAILABLE scion/tree page...to mention a few. It helps with not just the searching but the finding.

I understand, but the nature of the varieties page ("frames") is such that, to my knowledge, you cannot link to any of the other pages without opening a new window. It was a trade off made when we introduced the index column and made it possible to jump from one variety to its' synonym. The same trade off makes the "Back" feature not implementable. There is probably some java script tricks that would "fix" these irritations, but I do not have the skills to accomplish that. At the time that we implemented the "jumpable" indezes and synonym links, many possible solutions were tried and found wanting, before we stumbled upon the current solution.

There are several methods of breaking out of frames, some involve spawning new pages, some will actually do this without loading a new page.  If you have not considered the options, or want to play with some options, check this out, code samples and everything:  http://www.thesitewizard.com/archive/framebreak.shtml

I think using the "onload" attribute shown in the body tag of the F4F homepage, then linking to it from the frame of the variety db would cause the frames to break out once you clicked the link to go home.

I worked in interactive website design, mostly database and back-end driven, for many years, starting in 1998 and spanning through approximately 2004 (although I was designing websites since the internet started).  They would beat us if we used frames.  If you ever want to explore options for the page, let me know.  I can start playing around with some options in my spare time over the holidays and present them to you, see if you like any of them.

It would also simplify your life with editing things, reduce mistakes because you'd be using templates for the pages and entries.

Jason,

Always interested in was to make it better/easier/etc. I take a lok when I get time. Yes, I understood that frames are mre tham somewhat of a "no-no" but they did serve a useful purpose, here, or at least seemingly so.

If you have some alternative solutions, I am all ears.

It will be a couple of months before I have time to really focus time on it, but I'm willing to see if there's not a better solution.  What you'd need to do would be fairly simple, and could probably be knocked out with less than 100hrs work.

I had a nice quiet day of cleaning up e-mails, sorting little notes, etc. As a result, there is new info for Monticello Purple, Pananas Greek, Pananas Purple, Hardy Chicago, Sal's, Winterizing (under Growing Tips), and Jumbo Brown. Champagne was added (info to come). And there are some new links at the end of the 800's. Merry Christmas.

A fellow named Joseph sent me better translations of one of the french sites a long time ago, and I finally got around to incorporating them. Thanx to another figgie friend for helping make the website better for everyone.
Merry Christmas

Jon, any chance LSU Champagne was spelled wrongly as "Champaigne" in variety list. Merry X'mas.

What am I missing?

All is well now.

I did fix it. Thanx. Just wanted to tug your chain ever so slightly.

Thanks tor Jason for providing the code for the List of nurseries under Growing Tips, and helping capture some pix for archiving. Thanx to Bass and Adriano for helping with corrections to the Varieties pages.

Growing Tips > "Resources" was updated. 12 "More Info" pages were added or updated, about 100 new links were added to the "Links" page. Thumbnails, additional info, descriptions, etc. updated.

Fixed several smaller issues, added quite a few new links, added pix of Panapas Purple from "Ingevald", added new pix of the facilities and collectionfrom at UC Davis 2008 ("USDA / UC Davis" Link on left hand side.

Fixed some links and indexes. Added several new links, and a lot of new PDFs for the Links.

Added Link Nos 110 to 150 and some in the 190s and more PDFs.  So we are somewhere near 900. 1000 is not far away. And I can't hardly keep up with Ingevald.

Jon,

Sorry about the flood of links.     One forum member was noting that I had been "quite" for a while.   I had not expected to unleash so much at once, but the time was right.  There has actually been a lot of good stuff posted recently and greatly appreciate the sharing of the documents and websites that are discovered and other useful information based individual experiences.

I'll probably head back to forum hibernation once spring gets closer!
Thanks,
Ingevald

Added new Atreano pix, info for Martin's unknown, fixed some dead links and other little things.  What can I say, I don't do figs in the rain - yeah we get that occasionally.

Sorry to hear about the rain Jon.
Must be disheartening.

Holy Cow!  How you have time to deal with it is beyond me!  ;)

I still have a couple of things I need to report to you.  Still hacking through the thousand links organization.

We can use the rain. Weekdays would be more convenient.

FYI, just noticed on the Z page, both Zucchini and Zumwalt have the correct HTML anchor, but are hyperlinked to the Y varieties page.

Thanx,

Wish I had that much free time. ;-))

It's Jose's fault. He posted a pic of Zumwalt and I had to go look.

Link to "more pictures" for Fico Prata is 404'd.

I got a whole bunch of small changes, and some new pix done several weeks ago, as well as adding quite a bunch of new links. At this late date, I finally got them uploaded, but don't remember what all got done. I think the links now total pretty close to 1000, and there are still many more to add.
