I am curious about other fruit varieties the good folks in this forum are growing. I seem to have an addiction to growing fruits, berries, and vegetables. At least it is an addiction that provides good food and is very rewarding. I grow. Heirloom southern apples Pears Raspberries Rabbiteye blueberries Strawberries And of course figs I look forward to hearing about what everyone else is growing

Anyone got any good recommendations for kiwi, pomegranate, and table grapes that would do well in my area?
I've been told that Niagara is one of the best grapes you can find for our area. "Table" grapes are tough though. I was told by a number of people don't bother when asking about table grapes, specifically.
For Pomegranate in North GA would suggest some of the more cold hardy such as Kazke, Salavatski, Surh-Anor, Kaj-acik-anor, Lyubimyi. I am trying most of those and some others. I have had poor results with table grapes, but they basically have to take care of themselves where I have them planted, but I would suggest Mars or some other the other University of Arkansas that supposedly have more disease resistance for the southeast as a objective of their program.. If you want grapes here Muscadines are easy and require little care here. Probably most the hardy Kiwi would do well for you. I have had a problem with late spring cold spell with them but that is mostly due to the location I have them planted. Attached is a fairly complete listing of what I am growing in your area, but don’t assume that everything on the list will do good here as I am trying several things I expect to be failures

Satellite head, Thanks for the tip on niagara grapes. I have been looking at the Arkansas grape releases but there still seems to be alot of spraying for these vaieties to produce. I don't want to do a lot of spray. Strudeldog, That is a long list and quite impressive. Are you growing the citrus in pots and moving inside for winter or do you have a greenhouse? I really like muscadines and several wild vines that I pick from. My wife doesn't like their flavor so I was leaning toward concord or table grapes.
The Citrus are potted and I move inside as needed during the winter. Concord is a tough grape and will probably do as well as anything for bunch/table grapes. I hadn't really heard of Niagara being that disease resistant but maybe I will have to research that. The ones out of U. Florida some being Blue Lake, Lake Emerald and Daytona would be ones to consider as well, but I have not heard great reviews of taste and production on them. I have not been able to give my grapes the care they need with them located remote from my house. I am in the process of moving so hoping to remedy that. My wife doesn't care for Muscadines either, with her I think it is more the texture and the skins and seeds. To me they have very complex flavor and an explosion of taste not just sweet I love them. You need to grow Kaki persimmon as they are wonderful and low care. I had cold damage pretty bad last spring, but I am still high on them as a great fruit for our area. Mulberry, PawPaw and Sour Cherry should be considered as well.

celt, how does mango do in south jersey? i'm looking to increase my fruit variety. and mango is one of those my wife loves. it's like pulling tooth trying to get her to let me grow fruits.
Pete you need a condo mango I grow malika the tree only gets to be 8 foot tall and grows well in a 8 gallon. I treat it like a myer lemon and put it in a windo for the winter. it's also fairly hardy from my 2 years with it can stand a mild frost and the fruit are really good if you let them get ripe off the tree. I did just loose my maprang (mango relative)
Celt, That is quite a list. What is rolinia? Never heard of it. Strudel dog, I eat wild persimmons and have had some good Asian varieties. I tried an Asian type that I really liked. It was orange skin and meat, sweet, but was crunchy when ripe. I wish I new the name of it. Dfoster, What varieties of kiwi do you have?
http://www.capetrib.com.au/rollinia.htm
Womack:I have an Emerald and an MSU. The Emerald is an experimental variety I know nothing about. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Emerald-Sweet-Self-Fertile-Live-Kiwi-Plant-/130697397273?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e6e2c0419I didn't buy it from Ebay, but rather bought it by driving to this location in MI while on vacation. Long story. The seller on ebay goes by several names. This is the same seller listed a valentina fig which I also saw. http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/Valentina-fig-5719881?highlight=valentinaThey are both very small yet. I'll probably get a few more to make sure I get good pollination. Any recommendations?
Satellite head, Thanks for the link. That is a unique fruit. I don't know of any fruit that looks close to it.
Dfoster, You know more about kiwi than I do. I only recently got interested in them and only know of the ones from the grocery store. I figure the varieties you have will work in Michigan they should work down here. I plan on erecting a pergola on my patio and might plant some kiwis to grow on it. If I am not careful I'll end up planting my entire 3.5 acres in fruit trees.
Womack:I don't know a whole lot, just that they are unlike the ones you buy in the grocery store. Edible landscaping probably has the biggest selection that I've seen, but you hear lots about Kiwi Bob here on the forum from time to time. Most of the time you need a male and female. As for your 3.5 acres...... you're blessed and I don't think you should be careful. Plant away!!!!
