Figs and leftovers?

I'm going to come clean.  Growing figs in "interesting", but...

I am growing figs because I want to eat them.  LOTS of them.  My goal is to be able to grow more fresh figs that I can possibly eat...so that I can freeze them, can them , preserve them, dry them and anything else you can think of.

I'm looking for inspiration.  Do any of you have do anything inspired with figs and Thanksgiving leftovers?

C.J. - doing the "penguin" (lying on my stomach with my arms and legs not touching the floor.

Yeah, I'm all but foundered too.  Got another whole roast turkey out on the pation in the ice-cold grill because the freezer is full of just about everything and so is the fridge.

I put a half gallon of gravy in the freezer and will make more from the broth in this second turkey.

The second turkey was supposed to be for sandwiches and grazing during the ball games yesterday and last night, but by the time the girls let me have the kitchen back I could not get it out of the oven until seven thirty, so it will go home in with the children.

The grands are beginning to eat like horses, and of course they graze all day long.  Next year we need another big table.  They ate a complete 22 pound turkey by day's end, along with all the pies and dressing and trimmings that went with it.  We made enough dressing though that I will get to keep some for myself.

Thank God for such abundance.  I can remember when it was not so.

CJ -- thats funny, I mean the "penguin". I have many fig trees. They produce lots but I will be lucky to take an overall 30%. However quantity of trees allow me to have a happy wife & kids well fed on figs. Never seems enough. I need more LAND. I hope to solve most of this problem with my greenhouse.

Oxankle - that must be a gathering. Instead of you being a "penguin", I could picture you exhausted but with a great smile that family was there to celebrate. My parents were always  happy that we kids come home with their families & make a mess after a get together meal. Always there were left overs for each family to take home. Very true we thank the lord for such abundance. Thanks for sharing the good moments you had. Its such refreshing memories and its not the same with my parents gone.

I like turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce on them.  It would probably be good with fig preserves instead.  Unofrtunately I finished my fig preserves earlier this year.

Turkey is not an issue around here.  We went to my mother in law's house for dinner.  Since it isn't Thanksgiving without leftover turkey, I cooked a one for home/leftovers.  The selection was limited at the grocery store so I ended up with a 24 pounder.  We are going to be eating it forever.

Ox,

I haven't heard the term "foundered" in years.  Pretty funny.

Thank you for sharing a glimpse of your family Thanksgiving.  It is a wonderful thing that you have such moments.  Sharing food is one of the most fundamental expressions of love and you are blessed to have those who want to share it with you.

Paully,

Are you saying that you ripen/harvest 30% of the figs that emerge?  What happens to the other 70%?  I'm going to start a new thread of harvest percentages.

Demondmh,

The fig preserve sandwich sounds like a winner.

My turkey episode was similar to your.  I ordered a 14-16 pounder, mostly for leftovers.  I brought home a 20 pounder...for 2 people, hence "the penguin" reference.
