Figs at Walmart

Did not take a picture of but I saw last week a package (molded plastic to hold 12ish fig shaped/sized objects) with "Black Maderia figs" on the label. It had a pretty picture of a nice ripe red interior and inside the package you could see the figs through the plastic.
i did not buy any, but today I saw where one of our chefs at work had a package and he was using some in a presentation to a customer.  I tried one,,, it had a BROWN interior, very unattractive and was slightly sweet and very slightly figy.  NOT a good representation of what I would expect a quliaty BM picked ripe to be.  So sad that so many peoples only reference to figs are similar quality found in stores or fig newtons.  The real thing can be SO good.,

The real thing is intoxicating and simply, pure bliss.
It's sad that even most chefs can't differentiate quality in figs.
For the masses, a fig is a fig, is a fig newton. :(
Knowledge is power and can lead to ruination. Tread lightly if you dare! LMAO! :D

Sounds like they were Black Mission not Maderia .
Madeira i never seen in a package let alone at any nursery for sale or in the commercial trade.
Mission on the other hand yes.

Personally, I like fig bars (including the Newton).  When people ask me about figs (with their only reference being a Fig Newton), I tell them, "Eating a Fig Newton is like driving a Yugo (for those who remember).  Eating a fresh fig is like driving a Ferrari."  I don't think most of them get it.

Very good comparison, James.  I'm a Ferrari (fresh fig) kinda person.  =)

They must use white figs in them newton bars as there gross as can be when i tried one many many years back.
Come to the dark side.

You are right Martin. I had maderia on my mind and typed it

Duh,,,.

I thought they used magnolia figs in the newtons.
The real crime for me at wal mart is the honey they try to pass off as honey. I can not for the life of me find real honey anywhere but a farmstand.
