Figs & Blueberries

I was doing some work in the garden this afternoon and thought I'd snap a few pics of some of the figs & blueberries.

Here's three baby Black Mission figs I started rooting in late December when I cutback my larger tree (that still hasn't produced, but is only a little over a year old):

Here's one of three Strawberry Verte cuttings I purchased from Jon in mid/late February.  All three have rooted, but this was the first one potted up just today:

Here's two Brown Turkey figs ripening up:

Here's a third BT ripening on the same bush:

Also, I have four different varieties of Southern Highbush Blueberry.  It appears I got lucky in my selections since one pair ripen earlier in the season, but at the same time, and the other two are both just starting to flower out together, so they should ripen about the same time.  As a result, this is the first time I've really been able to see the results of cross-pollination which is supposed to increase both yields and size of the berries.

Well, it sure appears to be working!

This is a one year old Sharp Blue blueberry plant that is so loaded with huge berries that virtually every branch is drooping to the ground (you can get just a glimpse of some of the berries on the cross-pollenator in the bottom-right of the pic):

You can see the sagging of the branches in this pic:

The berries are huge!

I am jealous of everyone who lives in a warmer climate. My figs are just starting to break bud and my blueberries are just starting to put out the starts of their little flowers.
I have one variety of blueberry called pink lemonade. I am hoping it will bloom this year along with my sunshine blue. Would be nice to get some cross pollination.
Your blueberries are very big. Jealous :)

It does not even seem real... beautiful,my BB are flowering now.

I picked a little over 20 pounds of blueberries this afternoon:)

Talk is cheap Wills.  Show us some pics.....    :-)

I have some little tiny brebas on a couple of my trees.  Nothing else in my yard has even blossomed yet.    No fruit for me this month.......Not till July for us.

Nice pictures! Any nickle size Blueberries? I have a 'Jewel'. Blueberry that is absolutely loaded with developing berries. Update on the fig taste report ;)

You guys are killin me.   Still...thanks for the pics.  Gives me something to look forward to.

Great pictures!  The blueberries look amazing.

Thanks for sharing:)

Thanks everone for the positive feedback!

They're definately close to nickels, but just a little smaller.  Yout plant looks great and it's good to know that the Jewel is a good producer for you down here in FL, and it sounds like it flowers at the same time as the Sharp, so may be another good cross-pollinator.

Regarding the taste report, I picked my first ripe BT a couple of weeks ago and did somewhat of a taste report in this post:

Jewel is an excellent producer here in SoCal too. As is Sharpblue, Misty, Southmoon, and a few others. Emerald is an early producer of very large fruits with great texture, but is not super sweet. But I like it and have already been eating the fruits the birds don't beat me too. It looks like it's going to be a good year for the blues. :):):)

LOL...I have a Misty, a Sharp and an Emerald.  The fourth is an unknown Southern Highbush variety.  So, in one post, you managed to name all of my known varieties! :D

The Emerald and the Misty are both just starting to flower here.  The Sharp and unknown are already producing ripe berries.

The best southern highbush is Sweetcrisp.......it is head and shoulders above the rest.  No picture Centurian:)......I have over 150 bushes and last year harvested over 500 lbs and this year probably 600 and eventually 1000+ pounds?    Goes up every year as the bushes get older.

The Mysore raspberries are ripening now also

Very nice WillsC.  You guys are making me wish I had more room.  My little 1/4 acre of paradise is filling up fast.  I guess it's time to talk to the neighbor about the  empty lot he owns between his place and mine.
