figs changing color and dropping

  • tvp

Hi! I'm sure this has been covered, but I couldn't find anyone talking about it in the topics. I recently acquired a fairly young (2-3 years old?) Chicago Hardy that already had immature figs growing from a lot of nodes around the tree. I've had it for about a month, and now every once in awhile a random fig will turn purplish and fall off on its own (not even close to ripe).

I'm guessing I've changed some kind of variable from its old home, but wondered if anyone had insight into what causes that kind of behavior -- age of tree, increase/decrease in watering, change in light or temperature, etc. Have you had this happen much?

If it is not a cultural issue (sun, water, etc.) then it may bot be a Hardy Chicago. Should not behave that way unless it is a smyrna or san pedro type.

welp, I hope it's a cultural issue then because that's less confusing about what fig I have. Thanks for the insight!

My Nefiach dropped the only fig it had on it this year in June, I thin it formed under cool conditions and then stress caused it to drop, on another variety, it half ripened after I oiled it then dropped, I don't know if it was a bird knocking it off or if it got stressed as well and fall off.  I am not sure if it just because they are first year trees or if I messed up some where.

some trees drop their figs even if it's common figs. Pastiliere is known for dropping figs.. so are some Celeste. i have seen my Kathleen's Black dropping occasional few figs here and there. but if it's dropping all the figs, you might not have Hardy Chicago.
