Figs Dropping In SE Michigan - Any Advice??

Hello Everyone!

This is my first post but I'd like to thank everyone for the great information that's available through these exchanges!!

If I can share some history, my parents are from Greece and my dad always had a fig tree planted in our garden in western PA. My brothers and I spent many years covering his trees in the fall and uncovering them in the spring.  My in-laws are from Southern Italy and my father-in-law had the same passion about fig trees.  He had a fairly large tree in his garden in Niagara Falls, Ontario.  Every time these two were together, they would discuss the family first then talk for hours about their fig trees.  We lost both dads back in 2010 and I've maintained 6 trees in their memory.  Keeps them close...

I have 2 more mature fig trees from my dad which I believe are black mission or brown turkey.  I'll get pics posted for some help with identification.  I root pruned this spring and adopted the container approach from Bill Muzychko.  The trees have never looked better which I have to believe is due to the steady watering.  The first crop has looked great and this is really the largest fruit I have ever had this early.  Also, figs just started to take on color in the last week or so.  About a week ago we noticed a few of the figs dropping.  Saw about a dozen on the ground yesterday.  We've had a cool and wet summer so far in Michigan so maybe it's the weather.  Could anyone offer a suggestion on causes?  The trees look great, I just hate to lose the fruit right before ripening!!  Could I be watering too frequently?

Welcome to the forum Vious. I have had the same issue but with only one tree, my Celeste. We have had
tons of rain this spring/summer but Celeste has a history of dropping. I will let someone in your climate
respond.

some of the trees are known to drop figs. did the tree ever drop figs before? or is it the first yr it's doing it? if it's the first yr it's dropping figs, there must be something that tree doesn't like. too much water.. too little water.. weather.. can be number of different things.

Stress will make a fig tree drop. Hard to say with no pics.

Welcome to the forum!  If you edit your post then go to full editor you can change the title.  If you add, "in Michigan" to the title you'll attract the attention of one of our gurus who also lives in MI.

USDA Zones by Zip Code.  Enter your zip and it tells you what zone.   No more zone confusion.  Your identity is certain and you can go on with life  :)

It's great that you are keeping these heirloom figs going.  Good luck with your crop.

Welcome Vious . Nice story on your heirloom fig trees.
I'm experiencing a lot of fig drop on my mission tree (potted). This is the first year I have this variety , but suspect hot, humid then cool ,dry then loads of rainy days are the culprit. Weather is all over the place this year here .

I think each tree has different behaviour...
generally from what i see is that when over watered the tree feels safe and tries to grow than to grow figs and prosper  here in 120 farnehit i see tree in rocky soil hold their figs like there never tomarrow....

Thanks everyone for the welcome and the insights!

Got some pics to add to this thread.  First pics are my dad's 2 brown trees and a picture of the figs that have fallen.  The last two are of my father in laws white figs.  Could use some help identifying this variety...  These trees are a bit stressed but I'm pretty sure it due to the spring root pruning and the weather challenges.  Came close to losing a couple of these but luckily they pulled through...  These trees (4 in all) will be potted using Bill's method in the fall.  I've got another round of spring cuttings (mostly from my dad's trees) getting ready for new homes or expanding the crop...

And thanks for the editing tip Bob C.!!  Worked great!!
