Figs fending for themselves

I have been so busy at work for the past 6 months, I haven't had much time to devote to my beloved figdom. Winter kind of crept up on me and I have been undermotivated to go outside.  So no shuffle for them this year.  If they survive, great! But they are on their own.  My wife says I'm a changed man from last year.  lmao.

First freeze came before everything went dormant and all remaining leaves just dried up.  I plucked them off to make myself feel better.  They looked so sad.  Fortunately, it's been a mild winter so far.  Only a 1 night below 20F and very few below 30F.   Unfortunately, February is usually our worst month in Dallas.

It's been in the 60's the past few days, I see some green tips, but I think they have been there all winter.  I'll check on them again today. I hope they don't break dormancy too early like last year.  I think so far, only one tree died, and I don't think it was winter related.  The top had become brittle before first freeze.

Toward the end of the summer, I replaced all my plastic tags with aluminum tags.  Yesterday, I found 1 tree with 2 tags, and 2 with no tags.  I think some foundation repair works moved a tag.  I'll have to wait till the leaves come out to be sure which is which, as they don't have similar leaves.

Some of my 5 gal buckets with holes in the sides only are now rooted to the ground. Fun.  Gonna try to do some pruning today.

The project I've been working on at work is wrapping up, so I should have more free time now. Looking forward to seeing Jon's list this year!

James, You're enjoying much better weather than I'm experiencing 500 miles north of you (although the weather has been milder this last week here as well).  Question I have for you:  I have a young granddaughter in Carrollton/Dallas whom my wife and I try to see once a month.  Would you know of a good nursery not too far from Carrollton that carries figs such as Alma?  I have spent a couple hours already with my search engine trying to find a Dallas fig-carrying nursery.  Maybe they all do.  During my next trip down to Dallas, I'd like to buy a 5 gal sized fig tree, prune it, tie it up and drive it back home in my Honda.  I know I can get Alma cuttings online but I'm turning 60 this week- life is short so I'd like to get an Alma fig plant mature enough to bear fruit.

Thanks!

Don't think you'll find an Alma in a nursery around here.  There is a nursery just off of I-35 in Carrollton.  I think it's called "Strong's Nuresry".  They had several trees last year.  Mostely BT & Tx Eb.  I can't remember what else.  I'll check it out again come spring.

I *might* have an extra Alma.  I can't remember if I just have 1 or 2.  If I have an extra one, I'll let you know.

I've not tasted an Alma yet.  My best fig last year by far was Hollier.
